WWE’s reaction to The Wrestler

- Jeff Wilen of the Daytona Beach News-Journal has WWE’s statement as it relates to “The Wrestler” movie, which you can check out by clicking here.

As you would expect, WWE distances themselves from the portrayal of professional wrestling in the film, noting that it shows “how wrestling was conducted in some independent wrestling circuits” and not like WWE, which is a “global brand”.  However, they do say the film is “engaging” in the statement.

ROH

ROH Newswire for 12/29/08

- December 29th: Everyone at ROH sends a huge “thank you” to each and every fan that has supported us throughout the past year. We look forward to 2009 and entertaining you with what we believe is the best wrestling product in the country.

- Everyone in the Hammerstein Ballroom stood in shock as Austin Aries did the unthinkable. Shortly after defeating Tyler Black and earning a championship match, he watched Jimmy Jacobs lock the End Time on the fallen Black. He followed that up by wrapping a chair around Tyler’s head and scaling the ropes, ostensibly to cripple Black. Aries charged the ring, in an apparent effort to stop Jacobs, but shattered that perception with a thunderous chairshot on Tyler as he struggled to get to his feet. Even Jacobs seemed stunned at the actions of Aries, but that didn’t stop him from joining in an impromptu beatdown of the bloodied Black. No one is sure how to react to these events, and Aries has refused all attempts to discuss the matter. Jimmy Jacobs was more forthcoming, but also guarded, saying, “And everyone thought that Aries won our feud.” Jacobs walked off with a sly smirk and refused further comment.

- Larry Sweeney’s American Wolves certainly left their mark over the past weekend. The biggest of their “achievements” is undoubtedly the knee injury they inflicted upon Mark Briscoe. As of this time, we are uncertain just how long Mark will be out of action, but we do know that surgery is required to repair the injury. Things could be worse for the Briscoes, and ironically they could have their arch-rivals, Kevin Steen and El Generico, to thank that things aren’t worse. It was Steen and Generico that stopped the Wolves from going even further than they did, as Jay Briscoe could do nothing as he was handcuffed to the ropes and forced to watch his brother endure the torture commanded by Sweeney. We understand that comments from all parties are forthcoming in upcoming ROH Video Wires.

- A gigantic End of Year Sale is currently ongoing where you can save 35-40% Off your next order. Don’t delay as this type of sale doesn’t come around often. For complete details on how to save, click here: http://www.rohwrestling.com/news/article.aspx?id=1682.

- We are happy to announce that Brent Albright, Roderick Strong, and Erick Stevens will all be on hand in Manassas and Edison over the January 16-17 weekend. These three are elated to have finally been granted the steel cage grudge war that they have been seeking against Sweet-n-Sour Incorporated. Albright pleaded with ROH President Cary Silkin for the match, stating that Sweeney and his men are “ruining the company that (Silkin) built.” ROH officials are currently trying to decide when this huge battle will take place, and we will bring you that announcement and any other news as soon as we have it.

- ROH Officials are unhappy that security crews had to become involved in the events in Philadelphia and New York. In both cases, security personnel performed wonderfully, removing those that decided to interject themselves into the action. Ring of Honor respectfully asks those that attend our events to please respect the boundaries set forth by our ring barricades. We ask this of everyone, whether it be a paying customer or a wealthy prince. (heh!) Thank you for your attention.

- We’ll have the first match announcements for the ROH return to Manassas and Edison tomorrow in the Newswire.

Christian appears close to signing contract with WWE

- Jason Powell of Prowrestling.net is reporting that Christian is very close to signing a deal with WWE and that plans are already underway to bring him into the company to work a possible program with Jeff Hardy. The seed has been planted with Hardy being attacked prior to the Survivor Series PPV in November, and it is expected that Christian will be revealed as the culprit. It should also be noted that TNA seems to be under the impression that Christian is indeed headed back to WWE.

Chyna hospitalized

- According to a reader report sent in to Wrestleview.com, former WWE Diva Chyna was in fact on a combination of prescription pills and alcohol when she was taken to the hospital.

Chyna was said to have been sober for 10 months, however, she ended up off the wagon and into depression when a prescription she had for post traumatic stress disorder ran out. Chyna was said to have taken a combination of old sleeping pills and a half of a fifth of Grey Goose vodka.

She will remain in the hospital for the time being, reports her agent Mike Esterman, and upon release will enter rehab.

Chris Benoit’s doctor to be put on trial

- Dr. Phil Astin III, the personal physician of Chris and Nancy Benoit at the time Chris killed his family and hanged himself in June 2007, will go on trial Monday 3/16/09 in Newnan, Georgia. The trial was originally to begin next month but Astin requested and received a 90 day continuance from District Judge Jack T. Camp.

Astin was originally indicted in July 2007 before more charges were brought against him in May 2008. In all, the doctor faces 175 federal counts of illegal prescription abuse - made up of 150 counts involving 17 patients including two patients believed to be professional wrestlers who were working for World Wrestling Entertainment at the time. Astin has denied all charges.

At the time of the indictment, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that the patients allegedly received illegal prescriptions for Percocet, Oxycontin, Demerol, Lorcet, Ritalin, Vicodin, Xanax, Adderall and Soma.

The prosecution in the case also alleges that Astin’s prescriptions led to the death of a patient, presumably former ECW and WCW World Tag Team champion Mike “Johnny Grunge” Durham. Durham was under Astin’s care at the time of his death.  Astin was linked to 32 of 36 prescriptions written for Durham in the year prior to his passing.  Durham’s widow has come out strongly against Astin, blaming him for enabling Durham. Authorities allege Astin prescribed Durham 120 somas the day before his death in February 2006.  The prescription bottle was empty when Durham’s body was found.

Authorities first became aware of Astin in the days following the Chris Benoit tragedy as Benoit had visited Astin’s office just prior to killing his family. Toxicology reports listed Benoit’s testosterone level at 10 times the normal amount.

Astin, who has been driven into financial ruin due to the case, is being defended by a public defender. His original attorney, Manubir S. Arora, removed himself from the case due to Astin being unable to pay him.  Astin was initially under house arrest, but was later given clearance to work for a local towing company.

The family of the late Nancy Benoit formed a foundation in the memory of Nancy and Daniel Benoit earlier this year.  Donations can be sent to:

Pinfall Recall News Feed For December 21st

TNA

News Tidbits

- Vince Russo was pushing for an Al Snow vs. Mick Foley feud, but Jeff Jarrett overruled Russo and axed the program. Jarrett felt that if Snow had too much of an affiliation with the Main Event Mafia, that it would take away from the exclusiveness that the group has, being that they are all former World Champions.

- Brutus Magnus (Nick Aldis/Oblivion from the UK Gladiators) is being hyped on TV because they want to have a British star to promote for the upcoming UK tour. The company chose him because he had some mainstream appeal due to the UK Gladiators show.

- Nathan Jones will be starting with the company around the next PPV.

- Homicide, Hernandez and Booker T will be working on the IWA’s Annual Histeria Boricua show on January 6th.

- TNA has also provided talent (Team 3D and Shane Sewell) to WWC, which is the competitor to IWA.

R-Truth Interview

credit: hiphopdx.com

Late this week, HipHopDX spoke to Hip Hop fan and WWE wrestler R-Truth about the significance and tradition of the event. “It’s something that if you’ve never experienced, it is something that needs to be experienced. It’s awesome, it’s compelling – something that you could hardly explain. The troops are there, and they are so pumped up, so day to day visiting the hospital, going from the different camps, seeing the smiles and excitement and interviews, and they were very excited to see us come there. It’s just a love that was given both ways, from us to them and also from them back to us.”

The wrestler added that he traveled with nearly 30 of his colleagues to honor America’s dedicated troops.

R-Truth said that the experience touched him deeply, “Those guys over there are putting their life on the line for us. To me, it’s like entering WrestleMania in Iraq. It’s inexpressible. I know a lot of guys there that came from my hometown; they have been stationed there for years, from North Carolina. People from other places too…And just to have someone come there - a lot of wrestling fans too – but just to have someone come there and to perform, give them a show, they’re very appreciative of that.”

The tribute will air this evening on NBC.

Tribute to the Troops Ratings Report

While the patriotic nature of the “Tribute to the Troops” show makes the ratings performance more trivial than usual, such viewership data still serves to measure WWE’s relevance in pop culture and predict future interest in airing the annual program on national television.

This year’s special drew 3.39 million viewers, according to a report by MediaWeek’s Marc Berman. That total viewership figure - and its 1.05 in the adults 18-49 demographic - placed WWE’s program in fourth for the 9PM time slot Saturday night.

On a positive note, the program did defeat NBC’s 8PM airing of “Crusoe” (2.9 million viewers). It also tied ABC’s 8PM airing of “A Charlie Brown Christmas” in the 18-49 demographic, so it was not the night’s worst ratings performer, although it was in its time slot. Most importantly, its audience increased from start to finish; the show drew 3.32 million viewers from 9-9:30 and 3.45 million from 9:30-10.

Lance Cade Interview
The Interactive Interview courtesy of http://www.WrestlingEpicenter.com with Lance Cade from 12/19/08
Hosts: Patrick Kelley, James Walsh, & Nick Noel

It is one week before the true grand-daddy of them all… No, I’m no talking about WrestleMania or Starcade but Christmas! To celebrate the festivities of the season, we bring you one of the brightest young stars we’ve seen come down the pike in years. It is rare that we can say and mean that we have always been positive about a wrestler on the show but that is the case with Lance Cade. And, in a rare turn of events, Lance Cade is also a fan of ours! How cool is that?

In this near hour long extravaganza, Cade talks about his entire career from training with the “Heartbreak Kid” Shawn Michaels down in Texas to his big break in the WWE all the way through his release and beyond. This is a very candid and educational interview with a young man who has already been to the top and, we are sure, will be there once again!

You can hear this interview right now at http://www.WrestlingEpicenter.com as well as well over 300 other top wrestling interviews compiled over the past 6 years. We have always done this at no expense and that will not change anytime soon. But, if you want to give back for our efforts, we do have a store where you can pick up some great stuff and also help keep us free. http://www.WrestlingEpicenter.com

LANCE CADE:

- Lance Cade joins us on TII and admits to us right off the bat that he is a fan of the site & the show! He says that he reads the interviews and says “the site is really good”! Cade says he basically lives wrestling 24/7 so our interviews are a good way to pass time for a wrestling fanatic.

- Since leaving the WWE, Cade has had more time to spend with his family. He says that he was signed to a developmental deal with the WWE when he was 18 and had been with them for 9 years which didn’t leave much time with his wife & kids. Right now he is working for NWA Hollywood, is set to make appearances in Japan, and has rejoined Trevor Murdoch as a tag team which he’s really thrilled about.

- James mentions that Richie Steamboat will also be making appearances in Japan. Cade puts him over heavily and says “he’s identical in the ring to his father” and he puts over Ricky as the best babyface of all time. He also feels that it speaks volumes about Richie Steamboat and Reid Flair learning the ropes and going to Harley Race’s WLW because they both must realize that if they wanted it, they could immediately get a WWE contract like Randy Orton who Cade says didn’t even want to be a wrestler. It isn’t clear, however, if that was intended to be a negative shot at Orton or not.

- He was surprised that the Cade & Murdoch tag team worked so well. Originally it was supposed to be him & Kevin Fertig (Kevin Throne) and that many people liked the idea for the team. Tommy Dreamer called him up one day and told him he’d be working with Trevor as his partner one week before working with Fertig. He says that they clicked instantly. After a few weeks, he was asked which partner would work better for him in terms of in ring work and he picked Trevor.

- Cade says that the major plus to working with Trevor is that they could adapt to any team they faced and adjust to their style. He says they would have done really well in the late 80s when teams like Rockers, Hart Foundation, & Demolition were around.

- When asked about “The Band Being Back Together” when he reunited with Murodch, he acknowledges that it was weird how they were split in the first place, but he was very happy that they put him and Trevor back together. He puts over Arn Anderson as the strongest supporter of the team and they ended up spending a lot of time with him picking his brain to learn as much as they could from him because, “that’s who we wanted to be”.

- He teamed with Mark Jindrak, and he says that he had a great time teaming with him. He says that he’s working in Mexico right now and his talent is really blossoming over there. Teaming with him didn’t really work initially because they were thrown together and made face, but he says once they turned them heel, they were able to click better. He feels that there were no major plans for them though and they got split up not long after Wrestlemania XX.

- Cade loves tag team wrestling and says there aren’t a lot of real tag teams anymore. He says one of the big problems is that not many young guys are willing to do it anymore because you can’t be the top star in the company as a tag team. He puts over The Major Brothers, Curt Hawkins & Zach Ryder, as a team that started & trained as a team and was determined to make it as a team. But, Cade does not think it is fair that Vince McMahon or the WWE writers get the blame for the state of tag wrestling today.

- They had him as Garrison Cade originally because Lance Storm was on the roster at the time. He didn’t really like the name and mentions that Chris Jericho actually referenced the South Park character Mr. Garrison to him. When Cade was returning from the knee injury, he approached Vince McMahon and aired his dislike of the Garrison name. Vince seemed surprised to hear that Cade didn’t like it but agreed to allow him become Lance Cade. Cade feels that being Lance Cade allowed him to feel more himself instead of Garrison Cade where he never felt comfortable.

- Cade feels that most guys aren’t willing to do that with Vince because they are afraid of him. However, veterans like Shawn & Austin told him that eventually you have to speak up for yourself and get past the “I’m just glad to be here” stage. He feels he and Murdoch did a lot of that with Vince.

- He talks about his past experience, he says that he was a product of the WWE Developmental system, but he spent alot of time with great veterans like Regal, Michaels, Tracy Smothers, Jerry Lawler, Bobby Eaton, & Harley Race. He learned from them, and said it was some of the best experience he could have ever had. He says that a lot of young guys go straight to FCW and that is their only experience which limits them. Cade often wonders what would have happened if he hadn’t gone through the WWE system at a young age & opted to travel the World more and gain more experience. He once again mentions Richie Steamboat saying that he isn’t rushing to the top despite the fact that he could probably get by on his name.

- With all of the new opportunities coming his way, he says that he has plenty of chances to learn new things and says that “the day you stop learning new things from this business is the day you gotta leave it” If he ever goes back to the WWE, he feels that he would be a better wrestler.

- When asked about TNA, Cade says that “they are one storyline or one superstar away from being neck & neck with Vince” and he says that he keeps up with TNA, ROH, and various other promotions. He says there are great talents over there and he’d love to work there if given the chance.

- We bring up his pinfall victory over Shawn Michaels, he says it was great to do it, but it was just great to get to work with Shawn as many times as he did as they had many great matches. When he was trained by Shawn Michaels, he says that Shawn was very hands on in his training and did very well, especially with his class. He said alot of the other guys in there wree Shawn Michaels marks that were in awe of him, but Lance said that Shawn noticed that him and a few others were more determined to learn as much as possible from Shawn.

- This leads to a discussion about Shawn’s TWA promotion which featured alot of young talent and mixed in with some ECW talents like Sandman & Justin Credible. He said it was also great because at the time, they were on Saturday nights against Smackdown & WCW Worldwide, and TWA got higher ratings than Worldwide. We mention how great it was to have so many options back then, and Lance agrees saying that it is just more fun to have various options to choose from.

- Cade is not surprised at all that Jeff Hardy is the WWE Champion now and says that he is one of the best in there today. He also puts over the series of matches that he & Murdoch had with The Hardy Boyz. He said that one night John Cena came up to him and told him that he just could follow those matches.

- Lance then talks about his departure from the WWE. He says that it was a long story that started with a very bad shoulder injury that he suffered in a match with Bob Holly. He feels Holly got lost in the match and instead decided to dump him over the top rope. Cade said it was a bump he had taken a billion times before but he landed the wrong way on the outside which dislocated his shoulder. He knew that there were plans to split him & Murdoch up again and a singles run was forthcoming and this time it was going to be for real. So, he declined surgery. He now regrets not having the surgery done. He was in pain, and he was prescribed for pain killers, but they weren’t working well enough to make the pain bearable. So, he took a stronger dosage which knocked him out which resulted in the incident that happened on that faithful October day.

- Lance wants it known that his prescription use was not for recreational use. He admits it was a bad decision that he made and he says that it was his fault. “I’ve learned from my mistake, and its time to move on”.

- Cade doesn’t know if the WWE harbors any ill will towards him or not. He’d like to believe they don’t but he isn’t absorbed in that now. He’s using this as a learning experience and feels there is an endless supply of opportunities on the table for him.

- He says that his drive & determination to become a better wrestler was the main reason he stayed on the roster even during times when it seemed like a lot of guys were getting cut. He says it can be very nerve racking to see the WWE get out the clippers and remove so many of the guys from the roster not knowing if you are next.

- Cade is currently working for NWA Hollywood and the company is very well done production & talent wise. He says it s a great place for guys to work, but he doesn’t see it taking TNA’s place as Number 2, a spot that Cade feels is pretty solidly set for TNA. He goes as far as to say that if TNA’s ranking moves anywhere, they’ll slip into #1 rather than fall to #3. He feels TNA is one solid storyline away from really taking off.

- When talking about his promo skills, he says that during the Jericho/Michaels feud, he got to do his first live promo, and he was told he did very well. He had wished he had gotten more time to talk during that feud, even though he knows that he was the third wheel. He recalls him & Murdoch going to the writers and saying that them getting time to speak would mean more than their ring work if given the chance. “Ok, Cowboy Lance Cade… So what?”, says Lance. He feels promo time would’ve given him the chance to define the character better.

- Cade was disappointed that a feud with Murdoch wasn’t made a larger part of the show. He says that alot of the guys backstage were excited about the feud as they had the reputation of beating up their opponents so this time they’d beat the heck out of one another, but, for some reason, it wasn’t treated as a priority to make the feud work. Cade references other tag teams splitting like The Rockers, and feels it could have been a major angle that can make big stars out of the guys involved but feels it didn’t come to pass.

- He then discusses the WWE’s movement to being more PG. Cade says that its harder to hold back when you want to say or do certain things, but he also understands that there are kids in the audience. But he also says its hard when a few years ago the WWE had used everything but the kitchen sink, but now he says the move to PG was going to seperate the Great workers from the not so great ones. He references the Edge vs. Undertaker: Hell in a Cell match as excellent without even using blood. He says its the WWE’s way of “reeducating the fans” and that Vince even held meetings about how to do it.

- As with all the guests, we ask Cade about the Chris Benoit tragedy and the way the media handled it. He says the media coverage hurt him greatly and many people were looking at him in a different way because he was involved in wrestling. He said he’d go home and look at his wife and kids and know he’d never do anything like that. But, he says the media, in one day and maybe just for one day, made the name Chris Benoit and the negatives that go along with the tragedy eclipse Hulk Hogan in notoriety. He mentions that he was also bothered by how uninformed the media coverage was citing the CNN hatchet job on the John Cena interview and how unfair that was as well as how ridiculous it was for Nancy Grace to discuss it every night for months.

Kevin Thorn Update

It was reported yesterday by Bill Behrens that Kevin Thorn’s profile has been added back to the ECW roster page which could imply that his return to the brand may be soon. As of today, however, the profile is no longer on the page, so Thorn may not be returning to the brand as originally thought. It is unknown whether WWE posted the profile by accident and then took it down, or if they changed their plans for Thorn. He is still contracted to WWE, however, and it is possible he may be debuting on Raw or Smackdown.

Snitsky’s Future In Pro Wrestling

Regarding recently released WWE star Gene Snitsky’s future prospects in wrestling, they don’t look too good. Snitsky probably would have gotten regular work in Japan in another era due to his tremendous size, or perhaps even in Mexico, but the foreign groups are employing few Americans these days, so his odds aren’t good. As Tyson Tomko can attest to, he returned to the states because he was having trouble finding regular work in Japan. For foreigners to get work in Mexico these days, they either have to be particularly talented or have some really good connections as the regulars don’t like them coming in and taking their jobs. Regarding TNA, there doesn’t appear to be much interest in him there unless someone influential in the company such as Jeff Jarrett or Kurt Angle strongly pitches for him. Snitsky will probably just wind up on the U.S. indy circuit and doing appearances at various wrestling conventions.

New JR Blog

hope this finds every one having a great weekend. Yours truly will be heading to Toronto on Sunday to get ready for a HUGE night of WWE activities at the Air Canada Center which is essentially a sellout. There are lots of random thoughts from this end so let’s get started…

First of all let’s clear something up….I am not having a “war of words” with Lance Cade as a wrestling website reported in their more often than not knee jerk fashion. Understand this, I have NO issues with Lance and have expressed that time and again. He is a talented kid trained by one of my favorite people in the world, Shawn Michaels. Lance knows that if I can ever help him down the road that I will. He made a mistake. We have all made them. At my best calculation, he has been exiled from the WWE far less than me. Lance knows how to reach me if he has an issue and our relationship is healthy as far as I am concerned. When Lance was released, many websites gave false and sensationalist reports of why. I clarified the matter as best I knew it. Bottom line is that Lance Cade is a fine young man who has a great deal of talent. I have been steadfast in his corner since he came aboard the WWE, when everyone wasn’t by the way, and I will remain so. I hope that Cade returns to the WWE some day to realize his potential. For those that want to make this matter more than it is, go ahead but you are making yourself look bad and creating a story where there is none.

Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler will handle the voice overs for the WWE’s Annual Tribute to the Troops broadcast on NBC Saturday night at 9/8 central. Lawler was flying thru Charlotte when he became a victim of the fog and had to spend the night in the airport on his way home. He text me and was not a happy camper having to sleep upright in the boarding area while fans asked him over and over if he was “the King.” As I told him, “one can’t grieve forever.” King will leave Memphis Monday morning for his , photo finish into Toronto on Monday as, unlike his old partner, he lives in a virtual “stress free” zone.

I would say my chances of seeing one of my all time favorite hires, Trish Stratus, in TO is better than 50/50 but that doesn’t necessarily mean she will appear on TV. If she does,  it likely will be on Raw and it would seem that if she is available that a cameo by the multiple time,  former champion would be a good thing. However, understand that I have no idea what is in store for the TV shows on Monday and that me visiting with Trish is largely my wishful thinking. Is that so wrong??

Speaking of talented Canadians, I have been enjoying the Edge DVD and his story is a compelling one as are the many, many great matches that Edge has been involved. 24 titles since ‘98 is damn impressive and puts the Ontario native in Hall of Fame territory when his time comes in my view. Do you disagree?

After being punted in the head ala Ray Guy (Google it, kids),  I would suggest that it is doubtful that Batista will be able to be a part of Monday Night Raw this week but that’s an assumption and we all know what happens when one assumes.

Orton’s damaging kicks remind me of the “loaded boot” of Dr. X (Jim Osborne version) in the Mid South Wrestling days. Dr. X was one of the most underrated promo talents that many never heard verbalize.

I got a great message from Bret “Hitman” Hart a few hours ago and he said he was getting better every day after having knee replacement surgery. I challenged Bret to a foot race while he is healing but he wants to “race me around the block” once he is better. At that point I think the foot race offer will be off the table. I would love to take a camera crew to Bret’s place in Hawaii and sit with Bret and do the ultimate DVD interview complete with his thoughts on many of his favorite matches that he participated in and that he observed. Playing word association with Bret on virtually dozens of wrestling’s biggest names would be fun.

One of the Hitman’s favorite opponents, Stone Cold Steve Austin, celebrated a birthday this past week. Steve is in south Texas enjoying his ranch and family on the Broken Skull Ranch. He will soon have a ‘fridge full of JR’s BBQ Sauce, Ketchup, and Jalapeño Honey Mustard. I would suggest that 2009 will be a significant year for the Texas Rattlesnake in the film world.

Former WWE Champion Mick Foley, who is related by marriage to Oklahoma offensive line coach “General” James K. Patton, is rumored to be planning on attending the OU-Florida National Championship Game on January 8 in Miami.  If so, it will be good to see my old pal and former albeit short term broadcast partner.

OU being the underdog versus the Gators suits me just fine. Florida doesn’t even have to leave the state to play the game and the Sooner players hopefully can use the fact that they don’t allegedly belong in the game or that they took Texas’ place, etc as motivation. Sadly on one of the pieces of feedback on my weekly WWE.com Smackdown blog, a Texas Longhorn fan wrote that they “hated” OU and perhaps even me. The term dislike seems more approiate as this world has way too many “haters” in it for our own good.

“The Wrestler” is getting a ton of pub and it is likely that this film has totally resurrected Mickey Rourke’s career which peaked over 20 years ago. Individuals I have talked to who have actually seen the film describe the movie in different ways. Some liked it, some didn’t, some thought it was compelling, some thought it was sad, and most thought it was a story of human failure and success and not a specifically a “wrestling movie.” I am anxious to see it without question. I am also of the belief, as I have stated before, that it will not adversely affect the current product whatsoever. Many kids won’t be able to see it most likely as the “nudity” contained within the film would preclude youngsters from attending. Nonetheless I think the movie will certainly initiate some unique conversations about the genre of wrestling but the film having a lasting adverse affect on how many of us make a living isn’t likely.

Ric Flair called me this week and he attended the premier of the film after being personally invited by Mickey Rourke who is a long time fan of “The Nature Boy.” Flair said that Rourke reminded him of “one of the boys” from back in the old territory days of wrestling and was really impressed with many of the stunts that the 52 year old Rourke did in the film. Ric attended a private after party , imagine that, with Rourke, many of the cast and crew plus Chris Rock, 50 Cent, Pam Anderson and other notables at the Four Seasons which concluded at 5 a.m. I have experienced more than my share of “concluded at 5 a.m.” nights with “The Naitch” which I, and my liver, somehow survived.  Ric was in great spirits and has been staying really busy.  Ric recently did a private autograph signing with Joe Namath and Lawrence Taylor in New York City which Ric really enjoyed. I would have loved to have gone out afterwords with those three. Ric has an exciting 2009 shaping up with some really, potentially fun projects. He indicated that without question his send off at last year’s Wrestlemania globally re-established him and created so much awareness for him, his career, and his amazing legacy. After being on TV virtually every week since the mid 70’s, there aren’t too many folks that don’t have some level of familiarity with Flair including TV and advertising executives. Ric is also doing several appearances with Wal-Mart and Coca-Cola throughout the Carolinas in the coming months. Ric is also working out weekly with his son Reid who is looking to establish a wrestling career ala his Dad which won’t be easy to say the least. It seems that Reid and Ric’s older son David will be involved in plenty of tag bouts in ‘09. Ric traveling with his sons will be interesting as the WWE HOF’er will always cast a massive shadow that some day his sons will have to step out of,  if they can. There’s no hurry for that to occur but every son of a famous wrestler has to be able to establish their own identity even though many have failed at doing so.

We are working on our Q & A section which seems to be having issues as the dozens and dozens of responses I made have mysteriously disappeared into internet hell. Plus, our webmaster has apparently been kidnapped but I feel certain that he will reappear and that the problem will be corrected soon. Thanks for your patience and keep your questions coming.

We also appreciate the business that many of you sent our way and we are planning even more promotions and special offers after the first of the year so keep an eye on our on line store here on this very site. Happy Holidays!

WWE

Tyson Tomko could be out the door already

- Word going around is that Tyson Tomko, who recently re-signed with WWE, is dealing with a torn pectoral muscle. He was seen wearing a sling the day after his dark match in Pittsburgh Monday night, and some even think he went into the match with the injury and tried to keep it quiet.

Live reports stated that Tomko got a good reaction Monday in Pittsburgh, but Vince McMahon was not a fan of his performance. With Vince not pleased, that led to others in the company saying that his performance was poor and that he looked “heavy.” If Tomko did go into the match with a torn pectoral muscle, that would explain a lot since his workouts would have been limited.

There is already talk that his return may be a short one, including rumors that he is already be gone from the company.

WWE offers controversial contracts to superstars

- WWE has been offering long-term contracts to several big starts with clauses that strongly favor the company. WWE has offered Rey Mysterio a 5-year contract and Randy Orton a 10-year deal, where they don’t provide many ways out of the contracts for the wrestler, but are filled with clauses that would let the company out of the deal.

For example, if there is a three-year contract, WWE could break it at any time with just 90 days notice. Some top starts have enough leverage to broker better deals, but the company still is strict about protecting themselves with out clauses.

In Mysterio’s case, the company would be protected if Rey suffered another injury or Randy Orton had a behavioral incident and the company wanted out of the deals. In the case of an injury, WWE merely pays the downside guarantee, so there is incentive for the wrestlers to continue working. The policy was put in place in response to various wrestlers who abused WCW’s guaranteed contract system. This leaves the performers with very little leverage.

If the talent is locked in for a long-term deal, but the company can opt out at any time they please, it’s basically a no lose situation for WWE.

Explanation for why the WWE switched the World Tag Titles at a house show

- The Wrestling Observer is reporting that the decision to take the tag titles off CM Punk and Kofi Kingston had more to do with pushing The Miz and John Morrison rather than focus on Punk and Kofi as singles wrestlers. Coming off their Slammy win, creative wanted to give The Miz and Morrison the tag titles as well so they could “brag” that they now have two types of gold.

Torrie Wilson working for JBL, Smackdown saving MyNetworkTV.

- Torrie Wilson has posted in her latest blog that she has recently shot a commercial for JBL’s Mamajuana energy drink.  She is headed to Miami to do print publicity.

- The Los Angeles Times featured an article about MyNetworkTV today, noting that while its ratings are up, Fridays in particular (150%) thanks to WWE Smackdown, they have a lot of work to do in building the other nights of the network.

TNA

Nathan Jones to TNA

- It has been rumored for quite some time now that former WWE star Nathan Jones has signed a contract with TNA and will be debuting with the company. It’s now being reported that Jones has indeed signed with TNA, and he is expected to be introduced either at the Genesis PPV in January or a short time after that. Although Jones has been signed for awhile now, his debut with TNA has been halted due to a motorcycle accident which took place while he was training for his US return. Jones was struck by a cement truck and suffered nerve damage in his arm, however is expected to recover fully and should be cleared to wrestle shortly.

TNA tidbits including a rumor regarding Elijah Burke joining the company

- There are rumors going around regarding Elijah Burke heading to TNA. Burke and TNA’s Terry Taylor appeared together a few weeks back at a convention in New Jersey and had a long discussion about the possibility of him joining the company. Burke wouldn’t be able to sign a TNA deal until his 90 day no compete clause with WWE has ended.

- If the injury to Kaz is serious enough, TNA is considering putting someone else under the [Suicide] mask in order to keep the character on TV.

ROH

ROH newswire and more!

- December 17th: Ring of Honor will present their annual Wrestlemania weekend shows in Houston, TX on Friday, April 3rd with an 8pm bell time and Saturday, April 4th with a special 3pm bell time. Both events will take place at the George R. Brown Convention Center, 1001 Avenida de las Americas, Houston, TX 77010. Tickets for both events will go on sale Thursday, December 18th at 11am EST at www.rohwrestling.com

- It didn’t take long for the Necro Butcher to answer the challenge laid out by Rhett Titus http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBxj6zOB50k. Necro emphatically told ROH officials on late Tuesday night that he would love the chance to enter the Four Corner Survival on December 27 in New York City. “Titus is gonna learn his lesson”, said the Butcher. “And he’s gonna learn well. I never back down from a challenge. Not in the ROH/CZW Wars, not when I was with the Age of the Fall, and sure as hell not now. I’m coming for you Titus.” This completes the completely stacked Four Corner Survival as Necro joins Rhett Titus, Chris Hero, and Jerry Lynn at the Hammerstein!

- Speaking of Rhett Titus, he and Kenny King have signed to be on hand for ROH’s return to Manassas, VA on 1/16 and Edison, NJ on 1/17. Previously announced for the doubleshot weekend are Mid-Atlantic standouts Damien Wayne, Sean Denny, and Chris Escobar, as well as the “American Wolves” of Davey Richards and Eddie Edwards with Larry Sweeney. More stars of ROH will announced soon here in the Newswire.

- ROH World Tag Team Champions, Kevin Steen and El Generico, have both made phone calls to the ROH Booking Committee in the last 48 hours to discuss the claims made by Jimmy Jacobs that he and Delirious had the deck stacked against them in Dayton last month. Steen, in particular, was outraged that Jacobs brought what he called “complete bull” to the Committee in hopes of landing another title shot. This topic apparently wasn’t the only one that the champs discussed with ROH officials. We will have more on this before the week is over.

- It’s official. After listening to claims made by both competitors and weighing the situation very carefully, ROH officials have sanctioned a huge match for 12/27 at Final Battle! The heat between Tyler Black and Austin Aries has been building, especially after Black scored a clean pinfall over Aries in suburban St. Louis earlier this month. Now these two will battle it out again. This time, ROH officials have upped the ante. Austin Aries and Tyler Black meet in New York, and the winner of this contest will be declared the Number One contender to the ROH World Championship!

- The new ROH Video Wire posted at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1W2Y0JLYoGc features highlights from our recent event in Nasville, TN. This includes comments from Nigel McGuinness towards Jerry Lynn from after their World Title Match, followed by a disturbing locker room confrontation.

- The movie “The Wrestler” opens today in limited release. In New York City you can see the movie at Landmark Sunshine Cinema, 143 E. Houston Street, New York, NY 10002 and Lincoln Plaza Cinemas at 30 Lincoln Plaza, Broadway between 62nd and 63rd, New York, NY 10023. In Los Angeles it will be playing at The Landmark, 10850 West Pico Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90064. The New York Daily News gave the film a tremendous review today which you can read here: http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/movies/2008/12/16/2008-12-16_mickey_rourke_earns_oscar_buzz_with_role.html.

ROH officials received a surprising phone call this morning. It seems someone wants to return to their old stomping grounds.

- Tickets for the Ring of Honor shows in Houston, Texas, that will take place over WrestleMania weekend, are currently on sale.

Where is Perry Saturn?

- From Bill Behrens at wrestlezone.com

I received an e-mail from a fan who found a website promoting “exclusive” info on Perry Saturn who has been MIA for quite a while, and some believed might have died.

There is at least one source that suggests he now lives in Albert Lea, MN which is a small town about 90 miles south of the Twin Cities.

I last saw him at TNA in Nashville when he decided to walk out toward the ring in his underwear during a post show fan interaction.

I have no idea whether the info below is valid.

Foley speaks on The Wrestler and how he thinks Vince will view the film

- Mick Foley recently spoke with New York Magazine and discussed the movie The Wrestler. Foley recently saw the film, and was very complimentary as he stated:

“I walked in something of a cynic, figuring there was no way an actor could ever really get a feel for what we do without having done it. But within the first five minutes, I was completely sold. From an emotional standpoint, I found Mickey Rourke to be so believable. He made it so easy to suspend disbelief that within five minutes in the movie, I never once thought of him as being Mickey Rourke, let alone an actor. He was Randy the Ram. It was the little cues that really registered — like how he lived to get a reaction from people, even if they were just customers at the deli counter.”

When asked what he thought Vince McMahon would think of the film, Foley commented…

“I personally don’t think Vince will like it, because Vince really believes in the philosophy of keeping wrestling as entertainment for the fans. And part of that is keeping up the mystique of what goes on behind the scenes. I’m not sure he would enjoy a film that shines a light on the hardships that some wrestlers go through.”

Smackdown wrestler’s push could be cancelled

- ProWrestling.net is reporting that WWE officials have recently soured on R-Truth, aka Ron Killings. The Truth entered WWE with a series of video packages and a lot of hype, and was met with warm fan response. After seeing the fan reaction, there was even talk within WWE that he could be the next ‘chosen one.’ However, WWE officials have quickly turned cold on his in-ring performances. His push has been stalled because they feel that his basic wrestling skills are limited.

Word going around is that management feels he should improve in the ring and even though he can hit the flashy spots, he needs to go back and work on the basics.

ROH

ROH Newswire for December 15, 2008

- Roderick Strong’s challenge was answered as announced on the main page this morning athttp://www.rohwrestling.com/news/article.aspx?id=2455. The Kensuke Office agreed to a tag team match on 12/26 in Philadelphia, and Strong has selected Brent Albright to team with against Sasaki and Nakajima. The four men in this match surely know how to “bring it”, and without question the fans in Philadelphia are in for one hell of a ride. Sasaki said he wanted ROH’s “toughest”, and it’s hard to argue that there are any tougher than Roderick Strong and Brent Albright!

- Rhett Titus told us he had another “sweet” video in store (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBxj6zOB50k), but we didn’t expect that he’d be calling out the Necro Butcher. The ever flamboyant Titus has challenged Necro to enter the Four Corner Survival on 12/27 in midtown Manhattan. Already signed are Chris Hero, Jerry Lynn, and Titus. Necro isn’t known for backing down from any challenge, so we hope to have confirmation this week!

- Speaking of Necro Butcher, Jimmy Jacobs sent word late Sunday night that Necro, Steen, and El Generico will never get the six-man-tag match they want. Jacobs still can’t believe that anyone would be stupid enough to expect him to do business with the Briscoe Brothers under any circumstances. Jacobs has stated, however, that he’s not opposed to entering himself, Tyler Black, and Delirious into battle. In fact, he’s now challenged Steen, Generico, and Necro to face the AOTF in Philly on the 26th! Don’t forget that Jacobs has also lodged a complaint with the ROH Booking Committee, claiming that he and Delirious should receive another Tag Title shot based on the “unfair playing field” he alleges they faced several weeks back. We’re waiting for a determination from ROH officials on whether or not these charges merit any action.

- There are less than 24 hours remaining in the “Holiday Triple Savings Sale” on the main page atwww.rohwrestling.com. The first part of the sale includes 25% Off All Orders placed on the ROH website. With the second part of the sale you can get Free Shipping on your next order. The third part offers $5 Off all ROH live event ticket purchases. As always you can combine offers so you can mix the Free Shipping with the 25% Off Sale and also combine the $5 Ticket Sale with the 25% Off Sale. Sale ends Tuesday morning at 10am EST.

- Larry Sweeney and the American Wolves wanted to make a statement and face two teams in Philadelphia on 12/26. We now know who one of the teams will be. In huge news, Claudio Castagnoli and ROH World Champion, Nigel McGuinness, have petitioned to be a part of this match. This is particularly risky for McGuinness, who only 24 hours later will face Naomichi Marufuji in New York for the ROH World Title. Sweeney, normally overflowing with sarcasm, shockingly had no comment after learning that Nigel and Claudio were signed to the match. ROH officials did not offer who the third team might be, but said they expect to have that announcement this week.

- A special bonus match has been added to the DVD release of the 11/21 “Escalation” event from Dayton, OH. Recently in Chicago, Samoa Joe made his long awaited return to an ROH ring. Now, as part of the Dayton DVD, you can see Samoa Joe vs. Tyler Black in its entirety. Check out this first time ever match, and get a sneak peak at the new production equipment that was used for the PPV taping. We hope to have this DVD available to purchase at www.rohwrestling.com later this month and at the merchandise table during Final Battle weekend.
