WWE
Title match scheduled for Smackdown, Harley Race at Axxess, Boogeyman news
- During this past weekend’s airing of AM Raw, the ticker which runs at the bottom of the screen announced that Shelton Benjamin will be defending his United States Championship against MVP on this Friday night’s edition of Smackdown.
- It’s being reported that Harley Race is expected to make an appearance during the Wrestlemania weekend. It will most likely be at the Axxess weekend event.
- It’s also being reported that due to his 90 day no-compete clause, The Boogeyman has pulled himself from all indy appearances until his WWE deal officially expires. The man who plays Boogeyman, Marty Wright, is claiming that he will retain his Boogeyman gimmick when he begins working on the indy scene even though it seems likely that WWE owns the intellectual rights to the name and gimmick.

Sci-Fi network name change, Where Smackdown may end up, Mysterio injured
- Sci-Fi, the network that hosts the WWE’s ECW program, will undergo a name change from “Sci-Fi” to “SyFy”. They made the following statement on the change:
“We love being sci fi and we’re still embracing that,” said network president Dave Howe on Friday in a Hollywood Reporter article. “But we’re more than just space and aliens and the future – the three things most people think of when they think of ’sci fi.’ What this does is hopefully give us the best of both worlds. You keep the heritage, but also open up to a broader range of content.”
- It is believed that if MyNetworkTV shuts down, WWE Smackdown could end up on the “SyFy” network, as they will be looking to expand their viewership
- Rey Mysterio tweaked his knee when he slipped on the floor while doing a 619 spot at a house show over the weekend, but he isn’t expected to miss any time.

Jesse Ventura wants WWE investigated for wrestler deaths
- Former Minnesota Governor and WWE Hall of Famer Jesse Ventura claims he wanted to investigate World Wrestling Entertainment in regard to deaths in the professional wrestling industry and would have if he had been elected to the Senate this past election cycle. Ventura chose not to run.
In an interview with CYInterview.com, Ventura commented, “It’s one of the things that if I would run for the senate I was going to do a senatorial investigation on the WWE And you know for concerning what? What’s even a bigger importance is the fact that today they are still called independent contractors by the government which is absurd. They tell you when you wrestle. They tell you who you wrestle. They tell whether you win or lose. They tell you where you’re going to wrestle. They are your boss as much as any job in the universe. Yet McMahon is able to get away with calling all the wrestlers even today when he has them signed to exclusive contracts he still is allowed to call them independent contractors where they have to pay their own social security and he doesn’t have to pay a penny.”

- Larry Sweeney has been telling people close to him that he’s got two very special opponents in store for Bobby Dempsey, as Dempsey has two contracts leftover from when he was under the representation of Sweeney. The first matchup takes place as part of ROH’s Seventh Anniversary on March 21 in the Hammerstein Ballroom. “That fat slob is going to pay dearly,” said the Super Agent. “Ain’t no doubt about it. There ain’t no doubt at all.” ROH officials are unclear as to when Sweeney plans on making Dempsey live up to the second of the contracts.
- The first names confirmed for the second set of Ring of Honor Wrestling on HDNet tapings are: Roderick Strong, The American Wolves – Davey Richards and Eddie Edwards with Larry Sweeney, MsChif, Tyler Black, The ROH World Tag Team Champions – Kevin Steen and El Generico, and the Dark City Fight Club! - ROH World Champion Nigel McGuinness contacted ROH Officials over what “Nature Boy” Ric Flair had to say in the March 4 Edition of the ROH Videowire at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4qD_gxO2YA. McGuinness is reportedly unnerved that Flair has stated publicly that he plans on checking Nigel out closely to find out if he is “the man”. ROH officials have been informed that McGuinness plans on speaking to the legendary Flair face-to-face tomorrow night in Collinsville. Tickets will be available at the door! Will Nigel confront Flair for everyone to see? Be there to find out.
- You can see this week’s version of the ROH Video Wire here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyn7c9r_AbE.
- We have learned more about the modified Ultimate Endurance match that Jimmy Jacobs has requested for March 21 in New York. We have now learned that it is unlike traditional UE matches as Jacobs has proposed a 6-Man Tag Team Elimination contest. Similar to UE, the stipulations will change during the match based on the eliminations. But unlike, UE, we’ve been informed that each fall will determine the stipulation for the next. The result of the first fall will directly impact the next fall, and so on until there is only one man left. If a fall is won via pinfall, then the next fall must be won via some other means. If a fall is won via submission, then the following must be won via something different. It also follows that if a fall is won via count-out, then the next fall must be won via other means, meaning the next fall would then be contested under NO count-out rules. What about disqualifications, you ask? In this contest, there are no disqualifications. Because of the unique rules in this match, ROH officials are calling it a “revolution rules” match. We will have the participants next week in the Newswire!
- The Buy 3, Get 1 Free Ring of Honor DVD returns at the live events this weekend in Collinsville, IL and Indianapolis, IN. Interview from Men’s Fitness with John Cena
- The following press release was sent out today, hyping John Cena appearing on the April Cover of Men’s Fitness:
JOHN CENA TALKS ACTING, WRESTLE MANIA AND LIFE AFTER THE WWE IN THE APRIL ISSUE OF MEN’S FITNESS
On Newsstands March 16th Nationwide
NEW YORK, NY—He’s an actor, hip-hop artist and the top name in the WWE. Now John Cena graces the cover of Men’s Fitness where he talks about everything from his new role in the new film 12 Rounds to growing up as a scrawny teenager in West Newbury, Massachusetts, forced to workout to protect himself. “I started listening to hip-hop when nobody else was, started dressing all urban when nobody else was, and I got hell for it,” he says in the issue. “To counteract, strictly for self-defense, I wanted to get bigger. I figured if I worked out three times a week, I’d get big. If I did it seven days a week, I’d get huge.” And it worked. By the time he was 16, Cena had gone from 155 pounds to 215. “Nobody was giving me any more stuff,” he says.
Following are highlights from his interview in the April issue of Men’s Fitness, on newsstands March 16 nationwide.
On rumors about him being on steroids…
“Train with me for just a week, and you’ll see that I’m the guy who drives 250 miles between shows but will be at the gym tomorrow at 10 a.m. when most people are still sleeping in. I’m the guy who’ll fly to Australia, find a gym, fly back, and the first thing I do off the plane is work out, before I even shower or eat. I’ve made a living out of working hard.”
On his favorite Wrestle Mania (1987’s WrestleMania III)
“As unstoppable as Hulk Hogan was, I didn’t see him beating Andre the Giant, let alone picking him up. No one remembers anything else about that match, but that moment is so frozen in time. It was a moment that defined WrestleMania.”
12 Rounds Director Renny Harlin on his acting ability…
“He’s intelligent, he’s funny, and more invested than anyone I’ve worked with. I don’t know if it comes with his physicality, but he has such confidence in himself, definitely not to be confused with cockiness. I truly feel he’s a new movie star, a new action star, which Hollywood desperately needs.”
On getting the role in “12 Rounds”…
“Renny (Harlin) originally thought, ‘OK, I’m getting a wrestler, he can’t act, so how can I build the best movie around a broomstick?”
On bringing his personality to the ring…
“You hear a lot of people in our business say, ‘Oh, the character you see on TV is me with the volume turned up.’ What you see is me, 100%. That’s who I am at home. That’s how I am here.”
On life after the WWE…
In a 2005 Men’s Fitness interview, when Cena was asked if there was life after wrestling, he said no. “If I wasn’t doing this, I’d probably be mowing lawns,” he said. Apparently not much has changed. When asked if he still stands by that sentiment, he says, “Absolutely. When you hear the opening roar of the crowd, you’ll understand why. I certainly don’t want to be one of those guys who can’t let go. I think, hopefully, knock on wood, it’ll be for quite some time. If not, I’ll buy a big ass lawn mower.”

Awesome Kong upset about pay rate
- It’s being reported that TNA Knockout’s Champion Awesome Kong is apparently upset over her current pay rate, which is said to be lower than newcomer Brutus Magnus. Magnus, who was brought in from the UK after Dixie Carter saw him on the country’s version of American Gladiators, is still considered very green by many backstage in TNA and has not done as much for the company as someone like Kong. It is for reasons like this that Kong is apparently frustrated that a rookie is making more money than her as she feels she is a valuable asset to the TNA locker room.

ROH
March 9th Newswire!
- Eddie Edwards of Larry Sweeney’s American Wolves has issued a challenge for March 20th just outside Pittsburgh. His partner in the Wolves, Davey Richards, was hand-picked by Nigel McGuinness and will be facing the team of KENTA and El Generico. With that in mind, Edwards wants to prove himself in the singles ranks, and Larry Sweeney has no doubt that he will. “It’s simple, Eddie Edwards has been looked over by the wrestling public,” said Sweeney. “But he’s top shelf in a team, and he’s top shelf on his own. Top shelf is only what Sweet-n-Sour deals with, and on March 20th in that dump Pittsburgh, Eddie will show the world why.” Signed for Pittsburgh is Eddie Edwards versus Brent Albright!
- Jimmy Jacobs of the Age of the Fall has suggested that the ROH Booking Committee allows what he calls a “day of reckoning for those that stand against the revolution”. Tyler Black, meanwhile, has been requesting a shot at Jacobs for March 21st in New York, the very location that Austin Aries and Jacobs laid Black to waste at Final Battle 2008. Jacobs hasn’t ruled out the match, but has been steadfast that any such match would have to take place under terms that he, and only he, sets. “Tyler Black is blinded by the sheep that mindlessly chant his name. As is Necro. These are prime examples of the kind of weakness that the revolution is pledged to eliminate. Black wants his revenge? He wants it at the ’scene of the crime’? Well, I know I’ll have Brodie Lee at my side, and if need be, I’m sure Austin Aries could be persuaded to fight fire as well. But we shall see if Tyler Black is willing to meet my demands, because that is the only way he’ll ever get another chance to exact the revenge his shallow soul desires.” More on this at it develops.
- Silas Young has just been added to Indianapolis on March 14th, and will be in singles competition.
- ROH officials are happy to announce that the ROH World Championship will be defended on April 3rd in Houston. The current ROH World Champion, Nigel McGuinness, has two defenses signed before ROH debuts in the Lone Star State - on March 13th against Brent Albright; and against KENTA on March 21st. Regardless of who is carrying the title by then, McGuinness or not, it will be on the line. ROH officials are anxious to see the outcome of the title match in St. Louis this Friday night so that they can narrow down the challengers for April 3rd in Houston.
- The “March Madness Sale” continues this week at ROHWrestling.com where you can save 30% Off Your Next Order. For complete details and to get the sale code, click here: http://www.rohwrestling.com/news/article.aspx?id=2338.
- “The Young Knockout Kid” Chris Hero and Larry Sweeney have been scouting talent as of late, and have been very impressed by the resume of freelance lucha talent, Incognito. “Here’s a guy with tremendous upside,” said Hero. “He’s got the athleticism, heart, and obviously tremendous skill. He just needs direction.” Sweeney added, “Sweet-N-Sour Incorporated has been very successful in guiding foreign talent in ROH, and we’ve been looking to spread our reach into Mexico and beyond.” ROH officials have learned that Sweeney has been in contact with Incognito about a “Sweet-N-Sour Audition” of sorts, apparently to take place in Houston when ROH debuts there on the weekend of April 3rd and 4th. We’ll have more on this going forward.
- Ring of Honor is happy announce a working agreement with Booker T, the Booker T Fights for Kids Foundation, and the “Legends of Wrestling” Fanfest, taking place at the George R. Brown Convention Center on April 3rd in Houston. This is the same venue that will house the two ROH events that weekend. General Admission Booker T Fanfest tickets are free to anyone who has already purchased a ticket to the April 3rd Ring of Honor event at the Convention Center! This is sure to be a wonderful time for wrestling fans in the Houston area; for more information, please visit www.bookertlow.com.

Mr. T turned down the WWE Hall of Fame
- Mr. T recently sat down for an interview with The UK Mirror and discussed a number of topics including his decision to turn down WWE’s offer to induct him into the Hall of Fame. On that subject Mr. T said, “WWE asked me to be in the Hall of Fame and I turned it down. You know why? They put Pete Rose in the wrestling Hall of Fame. This guy can’t even get into his own Hall of Fame. After they put Rose in they came and asked me and I said “You don’t insult me! You don’t put Pete Rose in the Hall of Fame before me! I ain’t going to be a part of that. They put him in and he only did one WrestleMania, and he didn’t even wrestle.” It should be noted that Pete Rose actually appeared at 3 Wrestlemanias, working with Kane in some type of fashion at Wrestlemania 14, 15 and 16. WWE
WrestleMania and Mickey Rourke, Draft news, Creative news
- At this point, the plan for WrestleMania XXV is to have Mickie Rourke sit at ringside and get involved somehow with the finish of the Jericho match, reports WrestlingObserver.com. The idea is to build Rourke up as a former boxer and somehow implement a Big Show-type of punch to Jericho when Rourke is confronted. As far as Jericho’s opponent for the event, Vince McMahon has apparently been telling people that he has it covered, but no one knows who it is at this point. Hulk Hogan is saying that they could not come to an agreement and unless plans change at the eleventh hour (which is very possible), it won’t be him. There is some talk of Jerry Lawler being the guy to face Jericho since he’s stated in the past that he would like to wrestle at WrestleMania before his career is over. He has never wrestled on a WrestleMania event. Nothing is confirmed at this point, however.
- This year’s draft decisions will mostly be decided the weekend of WrestleMania due to the fact that the entire creative team will be there in Houston. Vince plans on holding extended meetings that weekend to discuss the direction heading out of WrestleMania and after the draft. It does look at this point that Triple H is definitely coming over to Raw because most of the key people don’t believe his WrestleMania match with Orton is going to be a one-off deal. Outside of that, it doesn’t seem like much talk has went into the draft yet.
- As we’ve reported, Freddy Prinze, Jr. is now out of creative, although reports now indicate that many have expected this for quite some time, specifically Stephanie McMahon. She offered him a promotion complete with more duties a couple of months ago, but he declined claiming he was looking at giving notice a few days later. Stephanie talked him into staying on part-time for a while, but he virtually took himself out of the picture for weeks leading up to his departure. He was on the creative email-list that went out, but had not been attending shows and if he did give any input via email, no one knew about it. The idea is that WWE would like to keep some sort of working relationship with Prinze, but it will not be in any creative capacity.

CM Punk talks about house shows, his good year, building ROH, and more
- Alfonso Castillo of NY Newsday has posted an interview with CM Punk as part of the hype for the Nassau Coliseum show tomorrow. You can read the full interview by clicking here.
The advantage of house shows versus televised events: “I think as a fan of wrestling, you can’t beat going to TV for the grand spectacle of the whole thing with the pyro, the music, and just the entire event atmosphere. It’s larger than life. But when you go to a house show, if you’re a wrestling fan, I think you have a better time because we have the freedom to pay more attention to the audience. We have the freedom to kind of go a little bit off in different directions. It’s more relaxed if that makes any sense. I know personally, I always have a better time on house shows. Sometimes at television you have to think about it. You’re doing a specific timed, television show. On a house show, we don’t have those restraints.”
Punk’s successful 2008: “The fact that I’m 30 years old, and in just this last year, in one entire year, I was ECW champion, I won the Money in the Bank at WrestleMania, I became World Champion, I was Tag Team Champion and I was the Intercontinental Champion, you know? And I won a Slammy.”
Thoughts on Ring Of Honor: “I’m proud to be able to say that I’m one of the guys that built that place – to just be able to say that that place is around because of me and handful of other guys. When times were tough, we were the guys who carried that place on our back – me, Samoa Joe, Homicide, Gabe Sapolsky. And of course there are countless others who are probably going to be mad that I didn’t mention them in this interview. But when you boil it down, we were the core guys. And I just love the fact that we built a place for guys to work and to learn. I’m very proud of that.”

Mick Foley discusses TNA storylines and wrestling again
- Mick Foley recently conducted an interview with Slam! Wrestling and discussed quite a bit, including twists and turns that the fans should look out for in upcoming months, him training for the Lockdown pay per view, TNA critics, and much more. The following are excerpts from the interview. To read the article in its entirety, click here.
On twists and turns in the MEM/Frontline angle:
“I think the feud has given a lot of focus to the show. We haven’t seen anybody jump sides, and depending on who does, it could be even more interesting. (It could) shake things up in a big way. Who knows? It might be me.”
On the timing of his first match back in the ring:
“Clearly it wasn’t the biggest match I could have been in, but I think it may have been the right time. It’s unlike (my last stint in WWE) in that now, it’s not going to be one match every couple of years; it’ll be a few matches a year. You don’t want your jumping off point to be the absolute zenith of your time there.”
On TNA’s critics:
“Some people have a love-hate relationship with TNA like they really want it to work but sometimes they get frustrated when things don’t seem to go the way they like it. (To those people, I say) just have patience. Some weeks we’re going to hit the bullseye, sometimes we’re going to miss the target completely. But overall, a year from now, I think people will think that the company has made great strides.”
On training for a match return at Lockdown:
“I am training and gearing up as if I might have to do something at that show. I’ll leave it at that, for people to wonder about.”

What more needs to be said!? You DON’T want to miss your opportunity to be on National Television with ROH for the first time! If this match doesn’t personify the “ROH 101″ concept and give a huge taste of the style and action that new fans can come to expect from Ring of Honor on HDNet, nothing will. Come down to the Arena this Saturday and Sunday, as ROH and HDNet look to kick off a long-term relationship, and we want each and every one of you along for the ride!

Quackenbush, making his return to ROH, will be locking up with Jerry Lynn! “I grew to love watching Jerry Lynn perform,” said Quack. “And to see his revival of sorts in ROH has been refreshing; it’ll be great to test myself against Jerry and to once again perform for the great ROH fans.”
- Bryan Danielson sent word to the ROH Booking Committee that he wants Bison Smith in the worst way, and apparently one match isn’t enough. He’s asked to face Bison in both St. Louis on March 13th and on the ROH debut in Indianapolis on March 14th. We have yet to receive word from Bison on whether or not he’ll accept this bold challenge from “the Best in the World”.

Father of man injured in Nick Hogan crash arrested for murder plot
- In what has to be seen as a shocking turn of events, John Graziano Sr., whose son was severely injured in a car wreck as Nick Hogan’s passenger in 2007, was arrested for a suspected murder plot against his wife. Graziano Sr. is accused of hiring a hitman to kill his wife Debra. He reportedly had been plotting to have his wife killed in a car wreck. The hitman that Graziano Sr. dealt with was in actuality an undercover cop who received some $2,000 and a gift card from Graziano as payment for the proposed killing.

WWE.com posts update on Jamie Noble’s injury
- NASHVILLE - For Jamie Noble, the agony of defeat at the hands of Mike Knox is thankfully only temporary. The Raw Superstar is recovering from a brutal corkscrew into the mat that left him motionless Monday night on Raw. It had been reported that Noble had no feeling in one of his arms and his hand.
“The Pitbull” was immediately placed on a stretcher by Dr. Chris Amann and WWE’s Certified Athletic Trainers and taken via ambulance to a local emergency room in Nashville.
En route to the medical facility, Noble reportedly had begun regaining feeling in all of his limbs. An MRI administered shortly thereafter confirmed the best possible news.
“All of Jamie’s tests were negative,” Dr. Amann told WWE.com. ”I expect him to be sore for the next several days, but I think he will do fine.”
The Raw Superstar is in good spirits, and he expects to return to the ring as early as Monday.

Dixie Carter issues address to TNA fans
- TNAwrestling.com posted the following message from TNA President Dixie Carter:
A MESSAGE FROM TNA WRESTLING PRESIDENT DIXIE CARTER
I want to take this opportunity to personally thank all of you for making last Thursday’s edition of TNA “iMPACT!” the most-watched broadcast in our company’s history.
Last October, we invited wrestling fans around the world to “Cross The Line” and sample our product, whether it was watching “iMPACT!”, ordering a Pay-Per-View, experiencing a live show or even visiting our website. We asked that if you enjoyed it, you would tell a friend about us. Well, you have responded and we are so grateful.
Since that time, TNA has also accomplished several major milestones including our debut in Hi-Def on SpikeTV, our first live television special from Las Vegas, our biggest event of the year with Bound For Glory and our hugely successful tour of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland.
In 2009, we will celebrate seven years in business. The little company who no one gave a chance has grown by leaps and bounds because of you, our fans. We will continue to work hard to earn your support. Several big things are already being planned including April’s brutal, all-steel cage pay-per-view, Lockdown, in Philadelphia, new superstars, new programming, a reinvigorated focus on the X Division, expansion of our online digital world and so much more.
Once again, all thanks to you. You are loyal and passionate and we don’t take this opportunity you have given us for granted.

ROH
ROH Newswire for February 25
- In case you missed it, KENTA is coming back to Ring of Honor! As explained in the main page article http://www.rohwrestling.com/news/article.aspx?id=2641, ROH, in conjunction with Pro Wrestling NOAH, is bringing back the multi-time GHC Champion for four dates: Elizabeth, PA on March 20th, NYC on March 21st, and Houston, TX on April 3rd & 4th. We will have more on KENTA’s match announcements for these four events soon. Don’t forget you can save 25% off on all live event tickets, or almost anything else we sell at www.rohwrestling.com until Thursday morning. Details are posted on the main page.
- A huge Four Corner Survival match has been signed for March 13th, just outside of St. Louis. Austin Aries made some very insulting comments toward Silas Young in Detroit in January. And while Young came up short in that match-up, he advised the ROH booking committee that he wants an opportunity to avenge the words that Aries spewed about his family. Meanwhile, even as Claudio Castagnoli and Kenny Omega will lock horns as part of ROH’s debut in Indianapolis, Kenny Omega heard the comments that Claudio made about him in the 2/20 edition of the Newswire. “Claudio calls me a flash in the pan,” said the charismatic Omega. “That’s just fine by me, because I beat him once, and I’ll beat him in Indy, and why not, I’ll beat him at the Gateway Center as well!” It’s Castagnoli, Omega, Young, and Aries on March 13th!
- ROH officials have recently been in contact with a member of the AAA roster recently about coming in for the huge debut weekend of events in Houston on April 3th and 4th. More on this next week as it develops.
- Part 4 of the poignant Jerry Lynn interview is available. If you would like to see more “sit down” style interviews with ROH stars in the future, let us know who and we’ll do our best to make it happen. That interview plus Lynn in action from ROH’s recent Florida swing is part of the Wire, as well as comments from D’Lo Brown and the legendary “Nature Boy” himself, Ric Flair, calls out Larry Sweeney!?
- The 5th of the 6 Television Main Events has been signed, and it features two men that have been connected by recent animosity. Claudio Castagnoli and Brent Albright have had several “wars of words” and a lot of controversy as of late, but that aside, ROH officials feel they are two of the most physically gifted competitors ever to set foot in an ROH ring. Add that to their recent happenings, including their grudge rematch on 2/27 in Danbury, and this qualifies as a TV main event!
- We have the first match announcement for the ROH 7th Year Anniversary Celebration on March 21st in New York City! The ROH World Tag Team Titles will be on the line as Kevin Steen and El Generico will face the American Wolves – Davey Richards and Eddie Edwards. And there is plenty of hate and bad blood to go around in this one, capped recently by Davey Richards attack on El Generico’s knee in Orlando. Now, ROH officials understand that order cannot be kept when the boiling point has already been reached between these four men. With that in mind, the ROH Booking Committee has decided that this match will be contested under “No Disqualification” rules!

Homicide ruled in Verne Gagne case, charges unlikely
- WCCO Television in Minnesota is reporting that the Hennepin County Medical Examiner has ruled that the death of Helmut R. Gutmann being ruled a homicide due to complications from a right hip fracture. Gutmann was injured after being attacked by former AWA World champion and WWE Hall of Famer Verne Gagne. They both lived in the same assisted living facility and were dealing with dementia as a result of Alzheimer’s disease.
The investigation is ongoing, although the belief is that Gagne is unlikely to be charged due to the circumstances involved. There had been previous instances involving Gagne at the facility which had caused him to be removed from living there, although he was later allowed to return. One of those instances involved Gutmann.
Gagne is 82. Gutmann was 97 at the time of his death.

- Media outlets picking up on the story are definitely adding up. As of now, TMZ, Fox News, and MSN have all covered the story. In addition, it’s getting plenty of publicity in Canada, which is understandable due to the fact that Jericho is from there.

Former WWE favorite at TNA taping last night
- Former ECW & WWE star Stevie Richards was backstage last night at the TV tapings and it is rumored he may be starting with the company soon doing a “loose cannon” gimmick of sorts.
Richards would be a great addition to the TNA roster should rumors prove to be true. He can talk and work, strengths TNA needs.
He was released in August of 2008 so is well past his 90 day non-compete.
Other former WWE stars that are free of their non-compete include Little Guido (Nunzio), Shannon Moore, Lance Cade, & Big Daddy V, among others. Paul London is either just past hois 90 days or very close. Kenny Doane (Dykstra) has a week or so left in his.

ROH
Ring of Honor Newswires for Feb. 9-10.
- February 9: We’d like to extend a great big thank you to the wonderful fans in Coral Springs and Orlando for two great events. “Proving Ground ‘09″ served its purpose, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the central Florida fans!
- As announced earlier today on the main page at ROHWrestling.com, the “7th Anniversary Show” will take place at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City on Saturday, March 21st. Tickets are on sale now. For a look back at the history of the Anniversary Show read here: http://www.rohwrestling.com/news/article.aspx?id=2575.
- Executives and crew from HDNet were on site in Orlando and were blown away by the talent that the ROH stars brought to the table that night. HDNet film crews captured lots of footage before and during the event in preparation for the huge National Television Tapings scheduled for Philadelphia on 2/28 and 3/1. This is the kind of opportunity that ROH has waited for and the time is near. Tickets are available for both days at http://www.rohwrestling.com/shoponline.asp?point=products&catid=163. Don’t miss out! This is wrestling history as ROH comes to National TV!
- Brent Albright still believes that he defeated Claudio Castagnoli in Detroit on January 30th. “If Turner (the referee) hadn’t disqualified me, I win, it’s that simple”, said Albright. “He was tapping out, and he knows it.” Castagnoli, on the other hand, had nothing good to say about Albright. “He is a big American oaf. He lost in Detroit because he is stupid.” Kyle Durden was recently able to get comments from both men, and a challenge was issued. Stay tuned to the ROH Video Wire later this week for all the details.
- There are two new sales in effect this week at www.rohwrestling.com. With the first sale you can save 20% Off your next order placed on the website. We also have a sale where you can save $5-$10 off ALL ticket purchases for upcoming Ring of Honor live events. With any ticket order you can combine both sales to save even more money on your ticket purchase. For complete details on the sale click here: http://www.rohwrestling.com/news/article.aspx?id=2215.
- Are you a musician? Have any interest in National exposure? If so, we can help each other! ROH is in need of original music for the upcoming HDNet television program, and if you’ve got original music that you think would fit ROH or one of its stars, we want to talk to you! We’d love nothing more than to be able to give National exposure to up-and-coming musicians in exchange for your talents! If interested, please email rohhelp@aol.com and let us know where we can hear you do your thing!
- We’ll be back tomorrow with more names for the HDNet Television tapings as well as the big live event in Danbury on February 27th!
- February 10th: El Generico will not be appearing in Danbury on 2/27 nor at the TV tapings on 2/28 and 3/1. He was attacked by Davey Richards after the Orlando event this past Saturday and has suffered a knee injury. Once again the “Wolves” target another knee. Larry Sweeney ignored all requests for comment. Kevin Steen had already left the building when the attack occurred, and he has assured ROH officials that he will be in Danbury and Philadelphia, and he wants revenge in the worst way. We have been told that footage of the attack will be included in an upcoming Videowire.
- ROH Officials are happy to announce that Sterling James Keenan will return to ROH as he will be appearing in Philadelphia on 2/28 as part of the HDNet National Television tapings. ROH Officials are high on Keenan’s ability and look forward to seeing what impact he’ll make with this opportunity.
- The fans of Danbury will be in store for a top-notch ROH World Title match on February 27. ROH Officials are currently negotiating with the potential challengers to Nigel McGuinness, who defeated D-Lo Brown in Orlando. Several competitors have legitimate claims to a title shot, and we will announce this match before the week is over.
- Sami Callahan has impressed in his ROH appearances thus far, and on 2/27 in Danbury he’ll face his toughest test yet as he’ll oppose Austin Aries. Aries and his new attitude have rubbed everyone the wrong way, and his odd relationship with Jimmy Jacobs doesn’t help. Aries has yet to unveil the “A-Double Manifesto”, but assured ROH officials that “Callahan will be lucky if he even gets a mention in the glossary”.
- Fresh off their impressive debut at “Proving Ground ‘09″, Kory Chavis and Jon Davis – the Dark City Fight Club, will appear in Philadelphia for the HDNet tapings on 2/28 and 3/1.

House Show Results!
TNA House Show
February 6, 2009
Charlottesville , VA
John Paul Jones Arena
1) Motor City Machine Guns defeated Sonjay Dutt & Sheik Abdul Bashir. Good match, MCMGs played total faces. This match featured the longest and most revealing “full moon” spot I’ve ever seen in a wrestling match with Sonjay Dutt flying around the ring with his backside exposed. The Guns won with some sort of a double team maneuver (missed the finish due to folks blocking my view).
2) Shane Sewell defeated Scott Steiner. Steiner jawed with the fans for a good while before the match, telling all the fat women to leave. He even managed to intimidate Sewell for a bit with Sewell almost walking out but coming back at the last minute. Steiner dominated most of the match but got rolled up while he was posing on the middle rope. Steiner laid out Sewell after the match.
3) Roxxi & Taylor Wilde defeated The Beautiful People (w/ Cute Kip). A lot of stalling early as Kip wouldn’t leave the ring. Good action that saw Wilde get the win after a superkick. After the match Kip got laid out by a slap from Roxxi.
4) Brutus Magnus defeated Eric Young. Magnus took the mic early and let us all know that the U.K. is where real athletes are from. Relatively boring match but the crowd continued to be hot. The crowd spent most of the match chanting ” USA ” at Magnus, I guess we’ve forgotten EY’s Team Canada days. Finish came when Magnus blocked the ref and hit Eric with a lowblow for the win.
~Intermission~
After intermission they filmed the crowd for a spot on Impact and on TNAwrestling.com. I think it was also to let the crowd know that cameras were in the building so a title change in the next match was a possibility.
5) Beer Money Inc. defeated LAX to retain the TNA World Tag Team Titles. Biggest heat of the night for this match. Lots of stalling early with Beer Money heeling on the crowd and threatening to walk out only for Earl Hebner to give them until the ten count to return or forfeit the titles. Funny spot as James Storm kept pushing Hebner so Earl took off his ref shirt and put Storm in a headlock while Homicide acted as the referee. The match really got started after that. Most of the match saw Homicide play face in peril with SuperMex making the save. Hernandez was eventually taken out outside and Storm hit Homicide with the superkick for the win.
6) Samoa Joe defeated Booker T. Booker T heeled on the “ugly kids” and “bunch of fat asses” in the building first, as well as making sure Joe knew it was non-title because he hadn’t earned a shot. Joe didn’t have his new face paint by the way. This was probably closest thing to a technical match on the evening with some brawling on the floor thrown in. Split crowd for most of the match with dueling chants. The ref got bumped and Booker went to use a chair but Mick Foley ran from the back to take it off of him. Foley gave Booker the Mandible Claw with Mr. Socko and then Booker turned around into the Kokina Clutch for the submission. Foley challenged Booker to a fight after the match but Booker declined.
Foley had some of the wrestlers return from the back to sign autographs at ringside and he took pictures with fans inside the ring after the show.
FINAL THOUGHTS: All in all it was a really fun show. The crowd heat was absolutely incredible and definitely the most sustained heat for any crowd I’ve been in. I have been to shows where there were individually hotter moments but never a show where the crowd was so amped up for every match the entire match through. Really great environment and the TNA crew was very accommodating. Here’s hoping for a PPV in Charlottesville one day.

New JR Blog
I thought I would do some general house cleaning with this blog to address a gambit of topics that did not make the “cut” or to underscore some topics that either have been addressed or that I am not going to provide feedback. This one covers a fair amount of ground.
I know that the UFC doesn’t appoint referees for their fights but their group certainly influences the direction that the MMA world is taking. My point was simply that the officiating in the MMA world needs to be uniform in its training methods and in how the Ref’s are sanctioned and assigned to better avoid any officiating issues that detract from the growth of the product. I know that many MMA purists would rather I not comment on “their sport” but I am a fan, I spend my $$$ on PPV’s, and this is my blog so I feel I can comment if I choose but those that it offends don’t have to read it.
Vaseline or not GSP wasn’t losing to the talented B.J. Penn at the last UFC PPV. However, the Vaseline issue may be the catalyst for a rematch. GSP’s size advantage will always be there nonetheless.
Made a mistake about the upcoming Fresno taping on Tuesday as we only do ONE show there which is almost like a day off. Portland is a doubleheader the Tuesday after the No Way Out PPV and doubleheaders seem to be the norm every other Tuesday until after Wrestlemania when the ECW/SD dual tapings resume in, I think, Austin, Texas.
Lots of speculation out there in the internet world about Trish Stratus wrestling Beth Phoenix at WM25 including an interview that the lovely, Canadian lass made a few days ago. Personally, I have zero knowledge of such a match but would love to see Trish at WM25 or any other time for that matter even though it would seem the Raw announcers would get to call that match. I can only suggest to stay tuned to Monday Night Raw as I do for any new developments. As a fan, it feels like a good pairing (no pun intended) if it ends up going that way.
We touted the Starrcade DVD in an honest and straight forward way when I received the rough cut of the DVD and now Starrcade is the #1 seller on DVD charts. One can really tell the amount of quality, main event depth back in Starrcade’s hey day and the lack of said depth is something we bemoan here perhaps too much.
Things we aren’t going to discuss on our Q&A section so please refrain from writing them include: Politics (What’s your thoughts on George W.?), Religion (no questions about religion will ever be answered on this site), people asking me to gut and quarter the WWE creative team (I have to work with these people and whether I agree with their ideas or not is irrelevant because they have a thankless job I would never want), what’s my favorite any thing as it relates to wrestling, who the “next big star will be” type questions (How can anyone answer that one accurately?), and questions about the personal lives of talents especially those that are married from people who simply crave “the dirt.”
Why don’t we carry PPV’s at JR’s Family BBQ locations any longer? Simple…free loading fans monopolized multiple tables while ordering nothing but free refills on beverages and MAYBE an appetizer while our other guests who did not care about seeing a WWE PPV had to wait longer to get a table to have their dinner. Many of them ended up leaving because of the long waits. We tried it but a small group of fans ruined it for the rest.
Someone asked if I was angry that I am not inducting Stone Cold into the WWE HOF and is that why I changed hats? WOW!! Uh, no the HOF is about Steve not me, Al Frankin, and I had my current hat custom made in OKC. I still have both of the hats Stone Cold presented me and for the record they are not for sale but may find their way into a JR’s BBQ some day.
All of the sudden there is all this talk about whether or not the WWE will have a Diva in Playboy prior to Wrestlemania. First of all, I do not know. I do seriously doubt it, however. I am more interested in the WM25 card than I am about who may be “tastefully nude” in Playboy Magazine.
Enough of the emails on how much some “HATE” the fact that the WWE is now rated PG. First of all, hate is a strong word to use and unfortunately it is used to much in our society today. Think about this for a second. The WWE has pulled back on some elements of their content to make it more family friendly but many aspects of the shows will still remain edgy. Nonetheless we are still talking about a TV show here and if a viewer “hates” a TV show SO much because of what they perceive to be philosophical changes then why doesn’t one simply eliminate the anguish and watch something else on the tube? No, I don’t want any wrestling show to lose viewers but there is no reason to watch any thing on television and then bitch and moan about it every week. Or am I missing something?
Will JR’s BBQ ever have a location in my town? Please don’t ask these questions again. Our plan is to build and own stores in Oklahoma where we can closely monitor and manage them because our management group is based here. We want to FRANCHISE stores elsewhere which means that other individuals put up there money and own and operate a JR’s BBQ Restaurant themselves just as if one were to buy a McDonald’s or a KFC franchise. So, I DON’T KNOW if any JR’s BBQ’S will ever be in a particular city outside of Oklahoma as we haven’t started franchising then yet. I hope they are eventually every where. Whew.
How did I like working with Jesse Ventura? The answer is, fine. I am sure I wasn’t his favorite guy to work with nor was he mine but Jesse was extremely bright and witty and certainly understood the wrestling business. The Body never lacked for an opinion and had a gift for being controversial. He was never a big preparation freak but neither is Jerry Lawler who is still at his post on the WWE’s #1 TV show. I wish I had Ventura’s representation when I was at WCW and when Jesse got his “big money” with a very limited schedule but that was my fault and, hand it to Ventura, he always seemed to do well in the money department.
Will the WWE ever promote a Scaffold Match? Hard to say as only a few athletes should even be considered for such a dangerous match. I won’t say “no” but I will say “doubtful” until proven otherwise. The types of talents that flourish in ladder matches would be the #1 candidates to compete in a Scaffold Match. I’ve seen some exciting Scaffold Matches but I’ve also seen some stinkers in my day.
Oh, yeah….please keep your emails succinct ala the shorter the better. I unfortunately do not have the time to read the long emails no matter how well worded they may be. It’s just the webmaster and me on this project and my schedule is much more hectic than most folks think.
Strike Force’s TV deal with CBS/Showtime is big for them and gets that new group seriously in the hunt as far as MMA is concerned. They still have to produce compelling fights and create new stars to make it work but clearing a network slot is big. Many new viewers who have heard of MMA in various forms still haven’t established their brand loyalty but without question the UFC is still the big dog in the hunt with the best group of fighters. Why a TV network doesn’t scoop in and work a deal out with UFC to supplement their Spike TV cable deal surprises me especially with the network’s needing programming that doesn’t cost them an arm and a leg to produce.
I got some emails from fans who were disappointed in the fact that there will likely be no more man on woman “violence” in the WWE. That particular consternation amazes me. Perpetuating this sort of thing has never been admirable in my view and what does it teach impressionable, young viewers? Domestic abuse is horrific in this society and portraying it on TV for “entertainment purposes” is hypocritical. I think the WWE has definitely made the right call on this matter if indeed the male on female aggression is history.
And no, I was not a fan of Chyna winning the IC Title back in the day either. I know I am a dinosaur and way old school but that development never tripped my trigger.
The F-Bomb laden emails we receive get erased without being read. So for those who feel compelled to travel that road please know you are traveling it alone.
For the record, some fans, according to their emails, think I have become senile but I chose to stand on the belief that I have “selective memory.” IE, sorry honey but I forgot to mow the lawn, etc.
Others want to know if I am competitive with the other announcers, who are all my friends by the way, and the answer is hell, yes. I love it when all 3 announce teams work a PPV as I want Tazz and my work to stand out as being better than the rest. I plan on 2009 being my best broadcast year in the business because none of us can take the future for granted and I sure as hell don’t know when this amazing ride that I have been on will end for any number of reasons.
Finally, I have received some emails from fans who are miffed that their email hasn’t been answered. Sorry to PO any one but I get to as many emails as possible however if I come across one that’s too long, out of bounds, or specifically DATED and we are past the expiration date as in one on a milk carton , they won’t be answered.
Thanks for checking out the site and I hope this continues to help expedite your emails and that you continue to send us your succinctly written questions remembering that usually one or two, max, questions will be addressed due to time restrictions.
Now… I would greatly appreciate if you would do some shopping in our store. JR’s needs a little economic stimulus too!

WrestleMania tickets still available
- The Wrestling Observer is reporting that despite ticket sales being strong for WWE’s Fan Axxess weekend and the Hall of Fame ceremony, the Wrestlemania 25 PPV itself is no where near sold out. Ticket sales are modest at this point, with WWE bringing in about a $5 million dollar advance gate, however there are still plenty of tickets left for the big show. Interestingly, it appears that the Hall of Fame ceremony will indeed surpass last year’s ceremony in terms of ticket sales. At this point, the only confirmed inductions are Stone Cold, Ricky Steamboat and “Cowboy” Bill Watts. That has to be considered impressive, and shows that Stone Cold is still a very big draw in this business.

Christy Hemme returning to ring soon
- Although it was originally reported that Christy Hemme would be missing a significant amount of ring time due to the neck injury she suffered while training with AJ Styles, it appears this is not the case. Hemme was in fact back in the ring at an indy show in Brampton, Ontario. Whether or not this means she is ready to return to TV for TNA is unknown, and we will have more on this story as it develops.

ROH
ROH news and notes for Feb. 4th
- While Lenny Leonard and Dave Prazak will start off as the commentators for the ROH on HDNet series of shows, that may change. The initial tapings will be a tryout of sorts for the duo, before the network officially signs off on them. This appears to be some form of creative control that HDNet holds, which makes sense since they are paying for the production of the shows.
- The Ring of Honor “Caged Collision” PPV will debut on April 17th, 2009.

Chavo Guerrero moves to Smackdown, Kizarny removed from roster page
- It now appears as if Chavo Guerrero is a full-time Smackdown talent as his name was moved from the ECW roster to the Smackdown roster. Although Guerrero’s picture still remains on the ECW page, his profile is now gone and can be accessed on the Smackdown page.

ROH
ROH Newswire for Feb. 2nd
- Everyone here at Ring of Honor sends a humongous THANK YOU to the great fans of Detroit and Chicago for making the events of the past weekend a wonderful success! ROH returns to the Motor City on Friday, June 26th and to the Windy City on Saturday, April 25th. Tickets for both events are now on sale at www.rohwrestling.com. This past Saturday’s event called “Caged Collision” will debut on Pay-Per-View Friday, April 17th.
- ROH World Champion Nigel McGuinness escaped Chicago with the gold after defeating El Generico at “Caged Collision”. We now know he will defend the title on February 7th in Orlando. ROH officials spoke with Nigel late last night, and an agreement was made. “People come to ROH to prove themselves,” said Nigel. “And this coming weekend in Florida is all about that. But it isn’t just up-and-coming grapplers that have to prove something; it’s also the top shelf talent like me, and even has-beens like Geritol Lynn. Now another has-been can add his name to the list. And that’s you D-Lo Brown. Sure, everyone knows your name, and I can’t really downplay your achievements in wrestling, but c’mon sunshine, why are you coming to ROH? To prove yourself! And you will, because you’re only getting one shot, love. And that’s against me in Orlando. And just to show that I know you’re far past your prime, I’ll put up the title and prove once again that ROH has no one to challenge me. One shot, Mr. Brown. That’s all you’ve got.”
- Ring of Honor officials announced the very first ROH television tapings will take place in Philadelphia on Saturday, February 28th and Sunday, March 1st! ROH and HDNet officials selected Philadelphia due to the city’s passionate fans and extensive wrestling history. Now you can add another historic event to that already rich Philly wrestling heritage. Tickets for the event on the 28th are already on sale. Tickets for the March 1st (special 3pm bell time) event will go on sale this coming Wednesday at 10am EST at www.rohwrestling.com. You don’t want to miss what will go down as perhaps the most important weekend in ROH history! We’ll have talent announcements and updates as we go forward.
- Fresh off of the huge victory over Sweet-N-Sour inside the Steel Cage last Saturday, Roderick Strong and Erick Stevens were probably looking forward to a little “R and R”. But it doesn’t look like that will happen. Chasyn Rance, Kenny King, and Rhett Titus have signed an open contract to face Strong, Stevens, and a partner of their choosing in Coral Springs on February 6. “We know those guys can’t possibly be 100%, especially not after that cage match, and we’re striking while the iron is hot,” said Kenny King. “The time is now, and now is OUR time.”
- Bryan Danielson suffered a concussion after being powerbombed brutally to the floor by Bison Smith last Saturday at “Caged Collision”. Danielson is still scheduled to be in Florida for “Proving Ground ‘09″ this weekend, but his status for the events is up in the air at this point. We still do not know what the agenda of the massive Bison is, and Kyle Durden’s attempt to get comments gave as no further answers. Durden’s “interview” will be in this week’s Video Wire.
- The BIG TEN SALE continues at www.rohwrestling.com until Wednesday night at 9pm EST. We have over 100 DVD’s on sale for $10 each, tickets for all events in February for only $10 each, plus save an additional 10% off your order. For complete details on the sale click here: http://www.rohwrestling.com/news/article.aspx?id=860.
- ROH Referee Paul Turner made a crucial judgment call last Friday night in Detroit that has upset Brent Albright and left Claudio Castagnoli elated. In the closing moments of the contest, Albright had Castagnoli locked in the Crowbar. Claudio was able to make contact with the ropes, which would necessitate a break. Albright did not break the hold, sending an apparent message to Larry Sweeney who was “observing” the match. Referee Turner began the customary “5 count” when Albright would not break the hold. The excruciating pain from the hold got to Castagnoli, as he tapped out just as Turner reached the count of 5. Rather than award Albright the decision via submission, he disqualified him for not breaking hold before the allotted count of 5. “In any situation, the rulebook is our world,” said Turner. “And I know Brent is upset. Even though Claudio submitted, it was to a hold that was ‘illegal’ in its application because of the contact with the ropes.” ROH officials stand behind Turner’s decision, and several phone calls from both Albright and Castagnoli on this subject have been fielded in the last 48 hours.

Reid Flair’s debut postponed
- The Wrestling Observer is reporting that Reid Flair will be unable to compete in his match at the Florida State Fair next week due to a stress fracture injury he received to his leg during training. The match has been postponed, and we don’t know at this time whether or not the rescheduled match will be taped for Brooke Hogan’s reality show on VH1. Hogan and her camera crew were supposed to be at the fair next week to get footage of the event for her show.
