New JR Blog
Jrsbarbq.com
Random thoughts on a busy weekend headlined by the nationally hyped Oklahoma-Texas Tech game here in Norman on Saturday night and then on to Boston EARLY Sunday morning for the Survivor Series. so here’s what’s on my mind today….
I have been trying to write as many fresh blogs as possible the past few weeks which has seen me write at all hours of the day and night. Being at one time a member of WWE corporate one learns to multi task as a means of self survival which is most Likely the same with all big corporations. I read on another website where someone responded to me writing “another blog” but asking the profoundly stupid question, “Doesn’t J.R. work?” Pardon me while I roll my eyes.
A fan wrote me and asked if I thought that there would be more talent cuts within the WWE soon and my honest and direct answer is that I don’t know. However, if forced to make a prediction I would think yes and that unfortunately, but honestly, it isn’t a bad thing to change the bottom and then the middle of the lineup at least annually. Roster “upgrades” was always my goal when I worked in talent relations as it is today. However, the more cooks in the kitchen regarding who goes and who stays makes it more difficult in my opinion.
The hardest part of the talent relations job for me was giving an individual the bad news that they were being released. I disliked that aspect of the job immensely. Years ago when former or active wrestlers had the responsibility of saying adiós to talents some of those individuals seemed to actually enjoy their power trips and providing bad news. Looking at it in hindsight, most of these men who were in positions of power were bullies at heart with low self esteem.
My friend Travis Hafner and his wife Amy are traveling down to Norman this weekend to see the Sooners play Texas Tech. Travis is the DH for the Cleveland Indians and his wife surprised him with OU tickets for the “big game” as an anniversary gift.
Another notable heading to Norman this weekend is Jimmy Johnson of NASCAR fame whose wife is an OU graduate plus Jimmy is friends with OU head coach Bob Stoops. There is a good chance that Jimmy will enjoy some J.R.’s BBQ at some point this weekend.
Rowdy Roddy Piper was featured on my wife’s favorite show TMZ this week apparently smoking some pot. Roddy’s reason was essentially medical in nature as in treating his cancer but nonetheless it reminded me of the territory days in the 70’s when many wrestlers would smoke pot recreationally on virtually a daily basis which seemed to act as a sedative for some of the higher strung alpha males. As the legend has it, “Hippie” Mike Boyette, who allegedly liked to smoke a joint occasionally, even had marijuana scented air freshener in his vehicle just in case he was pulled over by the police and if they smelled pot Mike would laugh and demonstrate the pot scented, air freshener. I can remember WAY back in the day when JYD’s adoring fans in southern Louisiana would bring Dog grocery sacks full of pot as a show of their admiration. Ernie Ladd used to talk to JYD all the time about what the Big Cat referred to as “demon week.”
One can expect a fierce effort from Chris Jericho this Sunday at the Survivor Series in Boston when he defends his World’s Title against the returning John Cena. So much as been made of John’s return, and rightfully so, that it seems as if Jericho is almost the “forgotten man” in this promotional equation. Jericho is a gamer and will be physical and challenging for Cena come Sunday. This will be an intense match and may surprise some fans with its level of physicality. I’m never right with my predictions (announcers never are, are they?) but I would consider taking Jericho and the points Sunday even though the reigning champ is seemingly the underdog going into the match.
I read where Abdullah the Butcher is retiring and a big event in his honor will be held soon in Puerto Rico for him. If one throughly examines Abby’s “run”, it is actually pretty damn amazing for a performer who was somewhat athletically limited but made up for it with a unique look and amazing crowd psychology. Abby was a fearless antagonist who perfected a very straight forward and physical style that, over the years, endured racism, the ever changing and fickle territory system, and in ring styles that seemingly morphed on a regular basis to survive for decades, most of the time as a main event star in a wide variety of areas and especially in Japan. I have great respect for Abby’s business acumen and his longevity. Years ago when I was a member of one of the volatile WCW “booking committees”, Abby gave me a heads up that some on the committee were out to “get me” for their own political gain and to have me replaced on the committee. I appreciated the heads up but in hindsight I wish I had helped my detractors facilitate my booking committee demise as being in that asylum was a bigger pain in the ass than it was worth and all for not one extra dollar. The late Gary Hart always called Abby “Butch” which sticks to me this very day. Congrats Abby on a wonderful career and best of luck with the continued success of your Atlanta area restaurant.

No announcer assignments have been made yet for the Survivor Series that I am aware of and all I know that Tazz, the World’s Angriest Announcer, and I are doing in Boston is the WWE Title Bout and the Casket Match. I assume that there will be more but that’s pure speculation.
It is my understanding that we are taping two episodes of Friday Night Smackdown in Albany, New York on Tuesday night which might become something that occurs on a more regular basis as a means of being a cost cutting measure. That sure works for me as it means one less week on the road. It is not easy voicing over a pair of shows that total 22 segments of TV but I will trade the extra work for a week at home any time. FYI, I worked until almost 3 a.m. Wednesday night/Thursday morning putting the finishing touches on the commentary for Friday Night Smackdown that airs this Friday night on MyNetworkTV.
Thanks for stopping by and visiting our site. I hope that you will tell a friend about our site and continue to support our efforts in selling our products that we are very proud of and of which we work so hard. This is crunch time for us and if you think we can help with your holiday shopping to some degree we certainly appreciate the opportunity.

Raw and Smackdown segments edited
- The Wrestling Observer is reporting that Brie Bella’s match against Victoria, which aired on last week’s Smackdown, was heavily edited. It was said to be a terrible live match, but came off as decent on TV following extensive post-production.
- A segment featuring JBL was cut this past Monday night on Raw because the show ran too long. According to live reports, JBL cut a promo hyping his match at Survivor Series which was later announced on WWE.com. He was wearing a neck brace during the segment and explained it was needed due to the tombstone piledriver he took from The Undertaker the week before. He then ran a contest offering a fan money if he/she could name the past five US presidents. The fan was unsuccessful.

Ken Kennedy talks about wrestling and his return
- The Orlando Sentinel recently conducted an interview with WWE star Ken Kennedy. Below are some highlights, and you can read the entire interview at this link.
You mentioned injuries and the one you have right now which is a shoulder injury that has kept you sidelined since August. You’ve been with the WWE for about four years now. Before you got there, I don’t think you ever had any major injuries. Since you’ve been there, you’ve had three. How difficult is that to not be a buzzkill and keep you down?
“Well, the schedule got increasingly…I’ve wrestled a lot more since I’ve gotten to the WWE. Our schedule is a lot tougher than the independent schedule since we wrestle anywhere from three to seven days a week. Seven days a week when we do our overseas tour and, so, it’s just one of those things. The human body is not meant to be abused like that day in and day out. Things happen and I had some unfortunate set of circumstances happen two out of the three times. One time was just kind of a fluke injury and the other two times were kind of mistakes made in the ring. Hey, it’s just part of the game.”
With the injuries, was it just a simple thing because it seems that more often it’s the simplest things in wrestling where guys seem to get hurt the most often?
“The first time I was dropkicked off an apron and dropkicked very, very hard off an apron so I ended up flying through the air like the Matrix and I hit the concrete floor with my arm outstretched on my side and that just popped my lat right off the bone. With the second injury, it was one of those fluke things where Batista just gave me a clothesline and I took a back bump like I’ve taken a million times before and I just felt my tricep pop. It can be anything on any given day. You look at some of the tapes, you look at some of the previous injuries for some of the guys. Triple H went to plant his foot and tore his quadriceps right off the bone.”
How is your rehab going and what’s the timetable for your return?
“The rehab is going pretty good. It’s slow going ” there’s not a whole lot I can do right now. I’m going to see Dr. Andrews and he’s going to give me an update and tell me how he wants me to start progressing my rehabilitation. He initially had told the office that I would be looking at a February 28 return date if everything goes well. I’m going to cross my fingers and say a couple prayers, take my vitamins and drink my milk and hopefully I’ll be back by then, maybe a little sooner.”

ROH bits and pieces
- November 13th: We’re just one day away from the debut of Ring of Honor “Driven” on PPV. The event will air on iN Demand, The Dish Network, and TVN cable systems. The early reviews have been outstanding including Sean Radican of pwtorch.com giving the main event of Jimmy Jacobs & Tyler Black vs. Kevin Steen & El Generico 5 STARS. Radican wrote “The main event was simply incredible. This is the best match I’ve seen in 2008.” Richard Gray of wrestlingnewsword.com says “ROH offers so much more bang for your buck than WWE or TNA pay-per-views that buying them should be a no-brainer. The final two matches of the show are two of the best matches that you will see on pay-per-view this year”. For more information on the PPV click here: http://www.rohwrestling.com/news/article.aspx?id=2387
- There is a video teaser posted for the “Driven” PPV at http://www.rohvideos.com/watch?v=WkqQbehGSxc.
- The stage is set! December 27th in New York City at the Manhattan Center, the grudge match of the year has been signed for Final Battle! Former ROH World Champion, “American Dragon” Bryan Danielson, will finally get his chance at redemption as he will oppose the man responsible for his permanent loss of eyesight, a man who in his own right is also a former ROH World Champion, Pro Wrestling NOAH’s Takeshi Morishima! Both men are focused on taking the other out for good, so much so that both parties have agreed to settle the score in a Fight without Honor! It should be mentioned that if circumstances find Bryan Danielson once more carrying the ROH World Title, then the belt will also be on the line! Tickets are available now at www.rohwrestling.com.
- Nigel McGuinness certainly isn’t planning on anyone else carrying the ROH World Title anytime soon other than himself. To that end, we’re told the training regiment for both his Dayton championship 3-Way-Dance against Austin Aries and Tyler Black, as well as his highly publicized PPV encounter against Bryan Danielson in Chicago, must be seen to be believed. In fact, it seems that Claudio Castagnoli has been seen sparring and talking strategy with McGuinness. As we all know, Castagnoli is opposing Danielson in a heated grudge match of their own on 11/21 in Dayton!

WWE To Crack Down On Marijuana Use
As we noted here earlier on WZ.com, prowrestling.net is reporting increased scrutiny by WWE on those using marijuana, plus $1000 fines.
It is true that quite a few wrestlers have tested positive for marijuana and have been fine $1000, several have repeatedly been fine.
In fact several big name wrestlers left WWE entirely in part because of the fines related to their marijuana use. At least one wrestler’s recent release by WWE was tied to repeat positive marijuana tests.
For some WWE stars the back-up plan for marijuana has been to drink more alcohol, which is legal and not a restricted drug unless a wrestler is found impared at a show. Add prescription pills to the mix (doctor prescribed), and you have much more severe potential problems than are created by marijuana (and that have led to talent release too), but since marijuana remain illegal in most States, WWE is in a tough spot given how complete their testing now is. How do they ignore pot, when there are even legal products sold at GNC that can cause test failures and that have led to talent releases.

Kung Fu Naki News and More
– At Tuesday’s SmackDown taping in Orlando, Kung Fu Naki defeated Curt Hawkins in a singles match. The match didn’t air during last night’s broadcast due to time constraints. The match took place before The Great Khali’s squash of MVP.
– On last night’s edition of SmackDown, Brie Bella picked up a win over Victoria, and then ran under the ring to escape Natalya and Victoria. Victoria and Natalya both reached for Brie under the ring, resulting in both Brie as well her twin sister being pulled out. The twins then attacked Victoria and Natalya, and celebrated afterwards. Brie’s twin is going under the name Nikki Bella, instead of her name in Florida Championship Wrestling, Nicole Bella. This wasn’t revealed on last night’s broadcast, but rather, WWE.com. They wrote in the results section: “WWE.com has learned that Brie’s twin is named Nikki and has secured exclusive post match photos. Check back tomorrow for an exclusive photo shoot with the Bella sisters.” The WWE site has added a profile — as well as new photos - of Nikki, which can seen at the following link:http://www.wwe.com/superstars/smackdown/nikkibella/
– D-Lo Brown has posted a new blog on the WWE Universe site, mostly talking about the next President of the United States of America, Barack Obama. Brown wrote: “I’ve got two words for you - Mr. President. I was on an airplane heading towards Germany when the pilot announced that the next President of the United States of America was going to be Barack Obama. I told my wife he would win by a landslide and that’s exactly what happened. It’s still a bit surreal. I would have given just about anything to have been in Grant Park that night. This is a time in American history that I thought I might not have ever seen, like so many others before me. To my grandparents, my heroes in the history books and the thousands that never made the history books, who aren’t alive to witness this glorious time- thank you for fighting, dreaming and believing.” He also talks about the Raw 800th episode celebration and the European tour thus far. Brown said Boogeyman gave his daughter a present after Raw.

Not suer if this is Brock’s issue or “his people” but I would suggest that the Lesnar camp focus on beating the veteran Couture and not worry about officiating. I am still feeling a Lesnar win but much like the Presidential election I am not fully sure of my choice. Straddling the fence is not so comfortable.
