JR’s Diva Locker Room Comments

Several weeks ago, Jim Ross wrote in the blog section of his website that the WWE Diva’s locker room dealt with its own form of politics and that not all the women got along with each other. Well, in his latest Smackdown This! column, Ross gives us a little more information on the atmosphere of the Diva’s locker room by saying: “Did you know that WWE Divas have backstage “Kliques” and that there is a pecking order as to who gets in the make-up chair first and can stay the longest? Things aren’t always what they seem, ladies and gentlemen, amongst the lovely ladies of Friday Night SmackDown.”

WWE.com has posted a new edition of Santino’s Casa, this time featuring a trip he recently took to Italy with girlfriend Beth Phoenix. You can watch the video at this link.

Two Raw Stars Return At FCW

2 Raw superstars returned to the ring last night at the FCW tapings in Florida. Melina, who is coming off a heel injury suffered back in June of 2008, made her in-ring return in a tag match that saw her team with Tyler Reks to take on Alicia Fox and Jack Gabriel in a tag match. Melina wasn’t scheduled to return to the ring until January of 2009, however her rehab worked ahead of schedule. Also, suspended superstar Dolph Ziggler returned to the ring, losing a match to Johnny Curtis. Ziggler was suspended for 30 says due to a violation of WWE’s Wellness Policy.

In other FCW news, infrequently seen ECW star Armando Estrada worked a tag match along side Lawrence Knight and Tyson Tarver in a victory over Yamamoto, Kafu & Johnny Prime. Ricky Ortiz defeated Kizarny, who has yet to debut on Smackdown. It should be noted that this past week’s Smackdown did not contain vignettes promoting Kizarny’s debut, and he does not make an appearance on next week’s show either.

Matt Hardy Injury Update

As we reported here exclusively on wrestlezone.com on 11-12, Matt Hardy posted “Matt is a lil beat up in Europe” with an old pic of his bruised face. He later replaced the pic with an unbruised one.

We had no further info on his potential injury until now.

Jim Ross notes the following in his recent blog:

“Matt Hardy is nursing a sore knee but is working through it as many of you will see Friday night on Smackdown. Hopefully, the injury is more of a ‘tweak’ and nothing overly serious.”

Wrestlemania Ticket Sales Dissapointing

- Ticket sales for WrestleMania 25 are, thus far, very disappointing for WWE. The show is not close to being sold out yet. WWE was hoping for a near instant sellout due to the WrestleMania name and because Houston, the location for the show, is traditionally a strong wrestling market. [WrestlingObserver.com]

- Despite the disappointment, WWE did their best to put a happy face on it by releasing this press release today.

WrestleMania®: Texas-Sized Ticket Sales

STAMFORD, Conn., November 9, 2008 – WWE® fans worldwide took home thousands of available tickets yesterday during the official on-sale date for the 25th anniversary of WrestleMania.

With ticket sales already exceeding $4.8 million, fans from 24 countries, including all 50 states and 7 Canadian provinces, are expected to attend the event, making the 25th anniversary of WrestleMania an event only a state the size of Texas could handle.

Tens of thousands of enthusiastic fans purchased tickets at the Reliant Stadium Box Office, Ticketmaster offices, and logged-on to Ticketmaster.com for the iconic 25th anniversary of WrestleMania. Tickets will continue to be available at Ticketmaster outlets throughout Texas and worldwide at www.ticketmaster.com.

WWE fans are expected to inject upwards of $50 million into the local economy with a weeklong schedule of activities, interactive experiences and events taking place in Houston leading up to the big event. The 25th anniversary of WrestleMania will also be seen by millions of fans around the world as they watch the broadcast in more than 90 countries.

James Storm Interview

On Tuesday night, November 4, James Storm, one half of the TNA World Tag Team Champions “Beer Money,” joined hosts Brian Fritz and Dickerman live on Between The Ropes on ESPN Florida AM 1080 and AM 1060 to discuss his current run with Robert Roode in Beer Money, the time he spent with Chris Harris in America’s Most Wanted and what was behind that team’s split, his beer holster belt, and much more.

The interview started out with some discussion about Storm’s character and how much fun it is to be able to excuse drinking anytime as just staying in character. Storm said “I take full advantage of that. And now the bad thing is Robert Roode is trying to get in on it too. I’ve seen him sneaking a beer or two out of my six pack and I’m like ‘what are you doing man’ and he says ‘well I bought the damn thing’ so I guess it’s all good then.”

James also talked about his beer holster belt. He said that he was able to sneak some beer into universal studios by using it. He also said he didn’t make it himself, but instead it was actually a gift from some friends of his.

Next James talked about how he feels about his current tag team with Robert Roode, Beer Money. “It’s working out really good. Me and Robert gel kind of like me and Chris did. We’re so opposite that it works well in the ring. We’re two totally opposite people, but when we get in the ring it just gels, it clicks.”

James has had a lot of success working as a tag team wrestler in an era where stable tag teams are something of a rarity. James was asked if prefers being in tag teams because of this and he replied that his success has been a result of being willing to do whatever he is asked to do, saying “I just make any situation work.”

Staying on the topic of his past tag team work James talked about the split of America’s Most Wanted and how he felt about having to be a singles wrestler. “I was against splitting up the team, but it’s one of those things where I had confidence in myself, I knew I could do it. I think a lot of people, including (AMW parter) Chris Harris, at the time, didn’t think I could do it.

“One thing I thrive off of is entertaining the crowd because the crowd is there to have a good time. That’s what I’m about. I can do wrestling, but I can entertain as well. That’s kind of where Chris lost track, because he’s a good wrestler, but he’s kind of bland in the entertainment part of it.” James also confirmed that it was Chris Harris’ idea to split up the team because Chris thought he could be a bigger star as a singles wrestler and discussed some reasons why Harris didn’t work out once he was signed by WWE.

The discussion then turned to Storm’s feelings on TNA’s growth since he has been there since day one. James said that TNA is still a lot the same as it used to be, though they are making more money now. He also credited Jeff Jarrett for keeping the locker room atmosphere so positive.

Storm was also asked his opinion of seeing so many guys jump to TNA from WWE since he has been with TNA since day one. “They didn’t come over with the big head, like they were better than everybody else. They came over to help the younger guys. They pull guys to the side after their match is over and critique them a little bit…I think that’s been a good thing. I traveled with Kurt on the road a little bit and he’s helped me out a whole lot.”

Christian Cage Rumors Swirl

Several sites have been reporting that Christian Cage is “set to stay with TNA”, and that “there was no talk of him actually having any intentions on going to WWE and that those rumors were inaccurate”.

I’m hearing the opposite and that it is more than likely that Cage will end up back in WWE for one last run.

The current economy has not helped anyone with investments and it is very possible that Cage sees one last WWE run as the best way to solidify his family’s financial security.

An additional rumor I’m hearing is that the Turning Point PPV or TV’s that follow might be Christian Cage’s last appearances for TNA, and that there may even be an angle in play that “says goodbye” to him tonight.

Greetings to all from under the black, custom made hat from WWE’s resident Okie, who has looked forward to this week much like many of us do for WrestleMania … it’s time for Saturday’s Oklahoma-Texas Red River Rivalry college football game in Dallas. More on that later, but now on to the ever-popular “Random Thoughts.” (Which is a metaphor for one not knowing exactly what to write about so one writes about many things.)

Even though the “World’s Angriest Announcer” and me had only two matches to broadcast at No Mercy, I personally enjoyed the pay-per-view and thought the fans in Portland helped elevate the presentation. The final three bouts of the pay-per-view, two of which were ironically, wink-wink, broadcast by the Friday Night SmackDown announce duo, really rocked and closed No Mercy on a noticeably, high note.

What are some of the things we may have learned at No Mercy? Here’s a short list:

* ECW Champion Matt Hardy is a legit, main eventer who has elevated his game. Matt is an overachiever who believes in himself, which is contrary to our American political system. Matt does really well when he isn’t dating a WWE Diva.
* No one seems to be sure what role WWE HOF’er Tony Atlas fulfills in Mark Henry’s world.
* Beth Phoenix is a winner but is her “better half” Santino Marella?

If you’d like to share your feelings on these topics, just check our forums.

Christian Cage Interview

Christian Cage recently did an interview with Slam Magazine, which can be read here. Or you can read below:
———————————————————————————

TORONTO, ON — Approaching his third anniversary in TNA Wrestling, Christian Cage has accomplished goals that many wrestlers wouldn’t be able to in their entire career. Rather than coast on his past achievements, though, Cage is looking for even more success in the future. This weekend’s Bound For Glory pay-per-view seems to him like the perfect launching pad.

“My goal? To get to the top,” he told SLAM! Wrestling while on a promotional stop in Toronto this past week for Viewers Choice Canada. “I want to have another long world title reign, and as champion, keep moving the company in a forward direction, continue on with good house show business and pay-per-views and things like that.”

For Cage, wearing the belt one more time — since coming to TNA, he’s twice won the NWA Heavyweight Championship — is more than simply being recognized as a great wrestler. “When you’re the champion,” he explained, “it shows that the company has the trust in you to be the face of the company, to represent it, and to be the measuring stick by which everybody else is compared. You become the centerpiece of the company.”

Cage won’t get the chance to win the belt at this weekend’s pay-per-view, however, he will still be involved in a high-profile match. It was announced on TV this week that Cage will be competing in a three-way dance against A.J. Styles and Booker T. Beyond the match, there is an underlying storyline around this contest, one in which Cage will undoubtedly play a pivotal role. For the past few weeks, the company has been setting up an onscreen feud between its veterans and its younger stars (the main event of the PPV is one such affair, as Samoa Joe defends his TNA title against Sting). The concept of the feud isn’t entirely new — indeed, WCW tried a similar storyline in its waning months, where young up-and-comers squared off against veterans who had been in the company for years and refused to pass the torch — but Cage says that TNA’s version “is actually a bit different than how it was done before.”

“(In this case), the young guys were the first ones there. They were the building blocks for the company that took the opportunity to make it into something even before anybody even really knew who they were. When (the veterans) saw there was something here, that’s when they jumped over and tried to take all the glory for it, saying that it was because of them that the company has a Spike TV deal and monthly pay-per-views, and that without them, the younger guys wouldn’t be becoming household names. I think it’s going to be more interesting this time around.”

Cage hasn’t yet picked a side in the feud, and it’s expected that his allegiance will be revealed in the Booker-AJ match. “I’m the guy who’s just sort of become a veteran and stepped up to a spot where a younger guy would be trying to get. But I’m not too far removed from being that young guy who was looking to step up and take that spot. I’m playing it in the middle right now, and we’ll see where it goes from there.”

No matter which way he sides, Cage is sure that the fans in attendance will let their reactions be known, as he has nothing but praise for the Chicago crowds. “I think Chicago fans are comparable to those in Toronto, in that they really get into the shows. They really support the talent and have an appreciation that (we’re) there to entertain them, and they let you know what they like and don’t like, and that’s what it’s all about.” When the crowd feels like they’re part of the show, he elaborated, it always leads to a better product. “They feel more attached to it, rather than when they just watch it at home like a soap opera or a sitcom every week,” he said.

For this reason, Cage likes the direction TNA has been taking over the past couple of years, whereby increasingly, pay-per-views are being held outside of the company’s home studios in Orlando. It’s important to do so, he said, if the company wants to continue to grow. “Eventually, you take it to the masses, and give the people who are watching the show the experience to watch it live. We have to do whatever we can to get as big as possible, and make the shows intriguing for our fans. If we can do that, they will want to tune in and come to our shows, and the rest will take care of itself.”

That will not only help TNA specifically, but the wrestling business as a whole, and that’s of paramount importance to Cage, as he’s hoping to be active in the business as long as he can, whether it’s in-ring or otherwise.

“I’m going to keep (wrestling) as long as I can stay healthy — knock on wood, I’ve never had a major serious injury. After that, I would definitely love to pass on to younger guys whatever I’ve learned, whether it’s with promos or announcing or training. It feels good to be in a position to be able to help guys out, and especially guys who have a hunger to learn and to step up and want to go far in the business — it’s humbling, but it’s nice.”

“Beyond that, I’ve always said that I would do it until it wasn’t fun anymore. Once it became like a real job, maybe then it will be time to hang it up and do something else. But when you’re walking into the ring every day and still say to yourself that you love your job, then there’s no reason to quit.”

If you’d like a chance to voice your opinion on Christian do so on our forums.
