As I See It - June 25, 2009

Hello and welcome to the return of the highly acclaimed As I See It series. It may only be highly acclaimed in my own mind but that’s neither here nor there because this marks a significant part of Pinfall Recall history. As we edge ever closer to the fourth anniversary of the creation of Pinfall Recall, I am pleased to return to your computer screens with my thoughts on the world of professional wrestling and, what’s more, I’m pleased to once again improve your lives by giving you something to read that can only be described as simply ‘Genius’.
Since Pinfall Recall began this journey about 4 years ago, we’ve all had to endure some pretty horrendous wrestling from WWE and TNA alike. However, I think there are definite signs that we are finally being rewarded for the years of disillusion as the WWE product at this point is pretty damn good. Well, to be honest, Raw is still quite terrible on most occasions but I really can’t speak highly enough of the other 3 shows that WWE puts out on a weekly basis. Smackdown really demonstrates some of the best wrestling programming that I personally have seen in quite a long time to be honest with you. ECW consistently puts out a solid hour of TV each week and the last episode of Superstars that I caught had John Morrison and Chris Jericho tear down the house.
Now whilst we’re finally being repaid for our years of loyalty to the product, the powers that be may not be so pleased as the sheer awesomeness of the aforementioned television shows is not portrayed in the slightest when it comes to the ever important ratings. And it is that fact alone that leaves me with a bit of trepidation going forward as I’m concerned that these really good shows will not be given the time to blossom before some change is inevitable. But for the time being, wrestling fans all over the World should join me in taking pleasure in the extremely high quality of the perceived “B” shows.
Now whether it’s down to the intriguing direction CM Punk is going or the great matches put on each and every week by the mid and upper card respectively, Friday Night Smackdown has been a joy to watch every week for quite some time now. I think it’s no real coincidence that the shows that have blossomed have been the shows that were left to their own creative devices without any array of McMahon influence. Touching back to the point I made a little earlier and with the under-performance in the ratings department, I am a little concerned that big ol’ Vinnie will feel the need to get involved and give it that extra special touch we all know and love…and by ‘love’ I of course mean ‘absolutely despise’. But that’s not something I want to delve too deeply into at this stage as, for the moment at least, we’re being treated to some damn good television.
Whilst on the subject of ratings, I wanted to take full advantage and take a cheap shot at TNA. That being the fact that WWE Superstars airs on the same night (albeit an hour earlier) to a fraction of the potential viewers that TNA iMPACT! reaches yet is only a 0.1 or 0.2 down in the ratings on a weekly basis. I don’t hate TNA by all means but facts like that should be made fun of, simple as that.
So what I’m getting at with this is that it is your duty as a fan of great wrestling that you watch Smackdown each and every week to show the powers that be within WWE that it is this type of show that we wrestling fans like to see. And I’m 100% confident that if you do watch the so called “B shows” (Smackdown in particular) then you will agree with me implicitly. In the past I’ve been first in line to take shots at WWE and I think that it should be noted and appreciated when they outperform the relatively low expectations that I have for their creative team.
I touched earlier on the direction that CM Punk is taking, which is another big factor that is keeping me drawn to Friday Night Smackdown each and every week. They’ve not turned him full on heel, they’ve kind of just let him linger and I really think that Punk is one of the few guys that can pull this off.
I really do think that the direction they are taking CM Punk has been quite genius in execution thus far. I’ve heard in some pockets of the IWC that Punk should attack Hardy for having a past riddled with drug problems whilst he has reached the top by completely clean and “straight edge”. In my opinion, this would be the wrong way to proceed. Don’t get me wrong, it would definitely add an intriguing aspect to the storyline but in it’s current form I think it would be detrimental to the progress Hardy has made to step up to the main event level. To focus solely on the somewhat shady and questionable past of our supposed hero would be a quite absurd thing to do in my opinion. Let alone the impact that it could have with regards the views of the parents of the WWE Universe by highlighting the drug addicted past of their youngster’s idol. What it boils down to is the fact that they haven’t put all their eggs in one basket by turning Punk heel straight away, they’re letting the crowd make their own minds up on him and to me that’s the best way to handle him. My only hope now is that they can give him some good storylines going forward to keep him at the top of the card and a fresh heel run may eventually the way to go with him.
Changing tact a little bit, has there ever been a bigger waste of our time than the Donald Trump storyline that lasted 7 whole days? I certainly can’t think of any in recent memory. I cannot see how that enhanced the product in any way shape or form. The whole thing was stupid and it actually resulted in them losing money as some retarded shareholders actually believed this shit to be real. I must admit, I’m not sure how I’d progress with Raw in terms of the management/authority figure but surely there was a more logical way than what we saw with this Trump fiasco. If, as rumoured, Ric Flair is to be the new general manager of Raw then I do not see the problem in having the Trump angle run a little longer but have Flair running the show for him and Donny would be seen rarely, if ever. I would much rather have seen something like that happen than what we were indeed treated to.
As it pertains to this Sunday’s ridiculously named Pay-Per-View “The Bash”, I think it has to the potential to be a fairly interesting show. Either way, it’s free to air in the UK on Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports HD1 so I’m not fussed one way or the other. There’s definitely a few matches in there that I’m down for…and there’s the added bonus that as it stands three days away from the PPV, there is no Big Show to be seen on the card! I’m interested in seeing The Miz against Cena, purely as a result of the long (by today’s standards) drawn out development of this angle. The Tag Title match with Legacy against Carlito and Primo should be another exceptional contest in my eyes, especially since the Colons are easily one of the best teams I’ve seen in quite a while. So with a fairly stacked mid-card and a couple good main event matches on the card hopefully this year’s Bash will not be the joke that it has been in pretty much every year that the WWE has promoted the show.
So that’s that ladies and gents, the returning column from yours truly is in the books. I hope you’ve enjoyed what you’ve read and by all means get in touch either by commenting on the blog or posting on the forums or even sending me an e-mail at AK@pinfallrecall.com.
Thank you for reading and may the next week of wrestling viewing be a happy one!

CM Punk interview, Evan Bourne says old ECW doesn’t compare to the new version
- PNJ.com has a Q&A up with CM Punk, discussing tag team vs. singles matches, John Cena, what the “CM” stands for, more. You can check that out here.
- The Sun recently interviewed Evan Bourne, discussing the “old” ECW vs. the “new” ECW that he is a part of. You can checkout the full interview here. Here is an excerpt of the interview:
“You can’t make a direct comparison between the rosters, as we’re so different. But if you compare ECW now to the old ECW on TNN - we blow that show out of the water. Every week we blow it out of the water. I have tons of respect for Rob Van Dam, Sabu, Super Crazy and Tajiri - as they were the guys I idolized growing up. I loved ECW.”

“It was really sad, you know? I think he’s a real talented guy. I don’t know if it was the right move, but we’ll see.”
He also spoke on releases in general, stating…
“There’s been a lot of releases, a lot of friends that are getting released just out of nowhere. You gotta deal with it, move on and just know to yourself that its not the end of the world and that there’s other things out there.”

ROH
Ric Flair leaves Ring of Honor
- According to a report by “The Slammer” of The New York Daily News, Ric Flair claims he left ROH because it wasn’t right for him to appear on both TV shows…
“I announced I would be leaving them (ROH) last week at the Philadelphia show because it would be on HDNet (cable TV) and I felt it wasn’t right for me to be appearing (on TV) for the WWE and ROH while singing the praises of both. I will be at their event at the Manhattan Center next Saturday as a ’special’ referee, not as a wrestler.”
But did WWE pressure him to quit ROH?
“The decision was mine alone. Nothing against ROH, but I decided you can’t serve two masters, and my loyalty lies with the WWE. I feel very comfortable being there.”
What’s his current deal with the WWE and will he wrestle again?
“I only have a verbal agreement with them to make appearances…. I’m still retired. Well, let me say that under very special conditions I would consider wrestling again.”

ROH
Ring of Honor Newswire for April 14th
- Ring of Honor returns to Pay-Per-View THIS Friday night with “Caged Collision”. This event will be available through In Demand, DISH Network, Direct TV, & TVN in the United States, and in Canada with Bell Express Vu, & Viewer’s Choice Canada. Highlighting this event is Steel Cage Warfare featuring Roderick Strong, Erick Stevens, Brent Albright, Ace Steel, & Jay Briscoe vs. Sweet ‘N’ Sour Incorporated. Also, Nigel McGuinness vs. El Generico for the ROH World Title; Bryan Danielson & Tyler Black vs. Austin Aries & Jimmy Jacobs; The Necro Butcher & Jerry Lynn vs. Age of the Fall; Claudio Castagnoli vs. Kevin Steen; plus more. ROH has set the standard by giving you true professional wrestling on pay-per-view at an affordable price. Click here for more details on this big event http://www.rohwrestling.com/news/article.aspx?id=2728.
- The big news coming out of the ROH/HDNet National Television tapings is that we have new Ring of Honor World Tag Team Champions! The American Wolves – Davey Richards and Eddie Edwards – defeated Kevin Steen and El Generico in a brutal ‘Tables Are Legal’ match in Philadelphia to win the titles! Their first defense will now be in Markham this Saturday when they face Bryan Danielson and Tyler Black! But their war with Steen and Generico is far from over. Should Danielson and Black capture the gold in Markham, it could turn the tag team division upside-down, but should the Wolves retain in Canada, they will face Steen and Generico in a rematch. Just signed for Chicago Ridge on the 25th, it will be the American Wolves versus Steen and Generico in a 2-out-of-3 falls tag title rematch!
- New ROH World Champion Jerry Lynn has heard the catcalls and discontent from a segment of the ROH faithful, but thus far, he says it isn’t a distraction. “I know that people are entitled to their opinion,” said Lynn. “And I get that. What I don’t get is people getting personal and disrespectful.” Lynn is referring to a segment of fans in Philadelphia who unleashed a very audible “(Expletive) Lynn” chant at him. “I’ve worked as hard as anyone in wrestling and I’m very proud of what I accomplished. Winning the ROH World Title really is icing on the cake, and I’m not going anywhere. I’m going to work twice as hard as I worked to get here, regardless if the naysayers like it or not.” Lynn is scheduled to defend the World Title in Dayton on April 24th against Roderick Strong, and on April 25th in Chicago against Colt Cabana.
- We have a lineup change for Montreal! Stemming from Philadelphia and the HDNet television tapings, ROH officials and the Booking Committee have made a change to the scheduled tag team match involving Brent Albright and Claudio Castagnoli. Since Castagnoli now has some association to Prince Nana and his Embassy, as evidenced by the interference on Claudio’s behalf by Nana and Ernie Osiris, the tag team match will now see Claudio Castagnoli and Jimmy Rave with Prince Nana take on Brent Albright and Colt Cabana! Cabana came to the aid of Albright in Philadelphia, and agreed to the change in his match almost before it was presented. Albright wants nothing more than to take out his frustration on Claudio, and neither Claudio nor Nana would offer a comment.
- The change mentioned above also gives Montreal the grudge match of a lifetime. It will now be Tyler Black versus Jimmy Jacobs one-on-one! Jacobs is protesting the card change to anyone that will listen, but this Friday in Montreal, the time for talk will be done! They faced each other as part of the very first main event on ROH on HDNet, but rest assured, in Montreal it will be a totally different ballgame. The hatred between Jacobs and Black has been simmering, and it could boil over this Friday!
- ROH officials are happy to announce that the charismatic Egotistico Fantastico has been added to the Dayton and Chicago Ridge events taking place on April 24th and 25th. In Dayton on the 24th, he’ll take on the maniacal Jimmy Jacobs in singles action, and in Chicago Ridge, he’ll face “Skullkrusher” Rasche Brown. ROH officials are high on Ego’s talents and look forward to seeing him shine!
- ROH is excited about their return to Boston on May 8th and Edison and May 9th! Just signed for Boston and Edison: Current ROH World Champion Jerry Lynn, Bryan Danielson, Kevin Steen and El Generico, Jay Briscoe, Tyler Black, Current ROH World Tag Team Champions – The American Wolves, Kenny King, The Necro Butcher, and Colt Cabana! More talent will be added and matches will be announced soon, right here in the Newswire.
- We have two new specials running at ROHWrestling.com until Thursday morning. You can now save $10 Off reserved seating tickets for all upcoming live Ring of Honor events. MVP says that prison led to his wrestling career
- The Evening Post over in the UK has a very interesting interview with MVP where he talked about how he got into wrestling when he was in prison. He said, “Actually it was one of the guards – he was an independent wrestler and would bring in video tapes and title belts. I was at work release, which is when you’re at the end of your prison sentence and you stay at a facility and work at a regular job out in the community. He told me he’d take me in his ring and teach me a bit. Needless to say the rest is history.” It’s a great example of someone turning their life around. To read the whole piece, click here.

ROH
Larry Sweeney and Dragon Gate claims ROH owes money, ROH responds
- Dragon Gate’s Cima made the following comments regarding Ring of Honor. The full blog entry can be read here.
“Well, I can’t tell you in detail because our lawyer is working on this case in the States, but what I can tell you is Dragon Gate no longer has any relationship with ROH. One of the reason is because we haven’t got payment from the past ROH show held in Japan in September 2008. Some of the ROH wrestlers’ airfare and their guarantees were supposed be shared between two companies, but the promise had never been kept. I recently hear from some of my dear friends not being paid by ROH as well. Any business is based on a trust, and we no longer wish to do any business with ROH again.”
- Ring of Honor then released this statement
We would like to comment on several topics that have been addressed by outside sources over the past week in regards to Ring of Honor. This will be our only public comment in regards to these issues.
First, Alex Whybrow’s (Larry Sweeney) claim that he is owed money from ROH. Mr. Whybrow is under contract with Ring of Honor. His contract clearly states that he is paid “X” amount of dollars when he appears for Ring of Honor. Mr. Whybrow has been paid in full for all dates in which he has performed in front of Ring of Honor fans. Any claims in regards to payment for dates in which he has been unable to perform is not in accordance with his ROH contract. Everybody at Ring of Honor would like to wish Alex the best of luck in dealing with his current issues.
Secondly, CIMA from the Dragon Gate promotion in Japan has made claims that Ring of Honor owes Dragon Gate money from our Sept. 2008 show stating “Some of the ROH wrestlers’ airfare and their guarantees were supposed be shared between two companies, but the promise had never been kept.” This statement is false. All Ring of Honor talent was paid in full for these events along with their airfare. CIMA and the Dragon Gate promotion are very well aware of what agreements they did not live up to in regards to the ROH/Dragon Gate show and why we choose to no longer do business with them.
- Word going around was that Larry Sweeney will not return to the company until he is able to handle his personal issues.

Wrestling News Digest 4/8/09: Smackdown and ECW get new GM’s, TNA signs female Japanese star, Tons of ROH news…with Flair, and Hulk Hogan sells energy
WWE
Smackdown and ECW get new GM’s, Next week’s ECW main event
- It was announced during last night’s ECW broadcast that Teddy Long is now the new General Manager of Smackdown and Tiffany is now the interim General Manager of ECW.
- Also announced on ECW last night that next week’s broadcast will be headlined by another elimination chase match. The bout will feature Christian vs Tommy Dreamer vs Finlay in a triple threat contest. The loser of the match, more specifically whoever is pinned, will be eliminated, and the two remaining superstars will compete in a singles match, presumably the following week, to determine the number one contender to Jack Swagger’s ECW Title which he will then defend at Backlash

Ken Kennedy and Candice Michelle injury updates
- The injured Mr. Kennedy recently spoke to The Miami Herald concerning his rehab and his in-ring return time frame. The following is an excerpt:
“I’m going to find out from Dr. Andrews if that’s going to be a permanent thing, and I’ll have to deal with it, or if there’s something more that we can do…I’d rather be 100 percent, [as opposed to working through the injury] but you got to do what you got to do in this business because the bottom line is this business is going to keep rolling with or without me. I’d rather be a part of it and contribute. I think I have a lot to contribute because there are a lot of things that I have yet to accomplish that nobody really has seen out of me.” You can read the whole interview at MiamiHerald.com.
- According to fans this past weekend at WWE’s Axxess event, WWE Diva Candice Michelle was telling people that she is about 3 weeks away from returning to the ring full-time.
