Wrestling News Digest 4/9/09: Shawn Michaels considers retirement, JBL does a shoot interview, and Kurt Angle admits to steroid use

Shawn Michaels considers retirement, JR now a color commentator
- F4WOnline.com is reporting that Shawn Michaels is seriously considering either retiring or reducing his schedule from full-time to occasional appearances following Wrestlemania 26. HBK has said recently that he wants to spend more time with his wife and children, and although he might not be fully retiring, he will be reducing his schedule with WWE pretty significantly after next year’s PPV.
- Todd Grisham and Jim Ross were the announcers during the Smackdown! tapings this past Tuesday night (scheduled to air this Friday). It a bit of a weird note, Grisham was doing the play-by-play and Jim Ross was doing the color commentary (the Jerry Lawler role, etc.).
According to JR’s blog, he will continue this role at least for the time being.

TNA
Kurt Angle admits to steroid use in interview
- The Philadelphia Inquirer is running a big article on Kurt Angle, discussing his career and next weekend’s Lockdown PPV, here are thehighlights…
On Taking Steroids and Being Suspended by WWE: “Have I used steroids before? Yes, I have, after I broke my neck and lost three inches in this arm and 21/2 in the other from loss of circulation. But I paid the price, both financially - I got fined $125,000 - and reputation-wise. I was a pure athlete, an Olympic champion. And all of a sudden, I’m like Kurt Angle the cheater? It really sucked. You can test me right now. I’ll come up clean. But there was a time when I did it.”
On the TNA Schedule: “It’s very grueling. There’s no time off. We don’t have an off-season. That’s why it’s so difficult on wrestlers. That’s why they break down physically. They try to rotate them in and out so nobody gets burned out. Except for me.”
On Who He Liked to Watch: “Roddy Piper intrigued me. He was always funny. The other wrestler I liked was Paul Orndorff. If those two weren’t on, I really wouldn’t watch.”

Wrestling News Digest 4/6/09: WrestleMania XV sets revenue record, JBL’s farewell, Comcast has PPV glitch, Flair appearing on ROH TV

WrestleMania sets WWE event revenue record
- WWE issued this press release today:
WrestleMania(R) Record Sellout
HOUSTON, Apr 05, 2009 — World Wrestling Entertainment(R) set a new record tonight at Reliant Stadium in Houston for the 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania, grossing $6.9 million in revenue. This is the highest grossing live event in WWE history. With 72,744 in attendance, the 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania surpassed SuperBowl XLIII in Tampa (70,774 attendance). WWE(R) fans from all 50 states, 24 countries and 7 Canadian Provinces attended the pop culture extravaganza.
“The 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania proved that everything is indeed bigger in Texas,” said John Saboor, Senior Vice President, Special Events, World Wrestling Entertainment. “The great city of Houston welcomed WWE fans from around the world and helped make WWE history as the 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania was our biggest ever.”

Backstage thoughts on WrestleMania, JBL posts his farewell
- The feeling backstage to WrestleMania was that HBK vs. The Undertaker stole the show, Ricky Steamboat looked great at his age, and that HHH vs. Randy Orton came off “poorly”. Some feel that they will work to get the title to Orton tonight. Overall management was happy with attendance and gate figures, and the backstage mood was described as “good”.
- JBL posted a WWE Universe blog after WrestleMania last night, with the title “JBL No More, Thank You.” The full blog can be read here, the following are some highlights:
“I don’t know what the future holds, never say never in life. But I have wrestled my last match. Months ago, I picked out this match. If Eddie Guerrero couldn’t be here for it then my dear friend Rey was the obvious choice, and I’m proud he was. I want to thank the WWE for a great career, for taking a chance on me and allowing me the keys to the car for a while. I will always represent the WWE wherever I go, I am proud of my 13 ½ years with the WWE. And, I am proud of the WWE for cleaning up a great sport to make it more healthy to everyone that is a part. However, I have no current plans on doing anything in the future on a professional level with WWE. I don’t plan on doing commentary, in fact; it hasn’t even been brought up to me. I don’t plan on being an on air character. I plan on starting the next chapter in my life, and closing the door on this one.”

WrestleMania buyrate could be affected by PPV glitch
- PWInsider.com is reporting that there was a problem with the HD feed (and possibly the SD feed) of the WrestleMania 25 pay-per view for all Comcast users. Comcast is the nation’s biggest pay-per view provider so this means anyone who ordered it and experienced that problem will get a refund and that could effect the final buyrate.

Wrestling News Digest 3/30/09: Michaels suggests Bret Hart for HOF induct, TNA video games on phone, Time Warner to drop HDNet
WWE
WrestleMania press conference, Shawn Michaels clears up heat over HOF rumors
- WWE will be holding a WrestleMania press conference at the Hard Rock Cafe tomorrow at 1 PM in New York City with Triple H, Ric Flair, Shawn Michaels, John Cena, Chris Jericho, Roddy Piper, Edge, Kelly Kelly, Eve and Mark Henry scheduled to appear.
- In his interview with the Orlando Sentinel that Dave Scherer linked to earlier today, Shawn Michaels clarified his comments on asking Bret Hart to induct him into the WWE Hall of Fame when it was time to go in. While some believed Michaels was taking a shot at Bret, that wasn’t the case. Read on:
“I was saying that from the perspective of I so much enjoy the Hall of Fame but it can be – and I want this to come out right – it’s a time of tribute and a time of honoring but often we get focuses all on the good and it tends to be, I don’t know, a little fluffy. I would like mine to be, I don’t know, maybe be honest. I’m one with who I was and I’m one with who I am. I felt that Bret Hart could bring a real perspective to that. He’s always been a guy even know that despite all of our differences, he’s still always been objective about my ability. They didn’t put this in there I don’t think – the only thing that he wouldn’t have any knowledge of is the person I am now and I understand that. It was from the idea of wanting someone that could give a real honest perspective of my career because it hasn’t all been fluff and it hasn’t all been fantastic and I think that’s OK. I just felt that I can be a pretty strange guy. (laughs) I supposed that it was just something that I thought, gosh, my Hall of Fame induction to be more about truth more than anything else. It’s sort of a fantasy, sort of, dream job and it’s a great line of work so we can create anything we want and it can be very fairytale-ish and I think that’s great on one hand. I just figured maybe it would be, I don’t know, neat or nice to have somebody that can give a real perspective on the journey because it hasn’t been a fairytale. It’s turned out awesome but it was a tough, rugged road. I just thought that maybe he could give a fresh perspective to it. It’s one of those things that you go I know this sounds crazy but…”

Honky Tonk Man mad at Greg Valentine
- PWInsider.com is reporting that former Intercontinental Champion The Honky Tonk Man is apparently upset with Greg “The Hammer” Valentine for choosing to go on a tour of Afghanistan. The two former IC champs were scheduled to wrestle on an overseas tour against Demolition, however when Valentine’s plane ticket failed to arrive on time, he decided to go on the Afghanistan tour instead. This apparently infuriated Honky Tonk Man, and he has reportedly said that Valentine better stay away from him during Wrestlemania this weekend, as he has now been added to Honky’s “Ass Whipping” list.

Updated Lockdown card, TNA may create new faction
- Here’s the updated card for Lockdown:
* Sting vs. Mick Foley for the TNA Heavyweight Championship.
* Team Angle vs. Team Samoa Joe in a Lethal Lockdown Match.
* Beer Money, Inc. vs. Team 3D in a TNA and IWGP Tag Team Title Unification Match.
* An X Division Xscape match.
* A Knockouts Queen of the Cage match.

- PWTorch.com is reporting that TNA is toying with the idea of creating a Bristish faction which would be centered around Brutus Magnus. They have several British talents with whom they work whenever they tour the UK, and the idea would be to bring them in full time to create the stable. One name TNA is considering is Doug Williams, who although is with TNA, is only working with them on a per appearance deal. He predominantly works UK tour shows only, but creative may bring him on board full time if they go through with the faction idea.

ROH
Latest ROH Newswire
Three HDNet main events are announced!
- March 27th: ROH officials are happy to announce the first three of the next 6 television main events to be filmed for Ring of Honor Wrestling on HDNet. The next National Television taping will take place on April 9th and 10th at The Arena in South Philadelphia. Tickets are on sale now and available at ROHWrestling.com. These three main event matches will take place on April 9th.
- Roderick Strong was on a very successful tour of Pro Wrestling NOAH when ROH filmed its first 6 weeks of television, and you’d be hard pressed to find anyone that could dispute either his importance or dedication to Ring of Honor. ROH officials are very happy that Strong will be at the next tapings, and not only that, he’ll be main-eventing one of the first 3 weeks to be filmed. ROH officials decided that his opponent should be one that will bring the best out of Strong. The ROH Booking Committee has decided that that man is none other than Austin Aries. The history between these two is well-documented, and we can’t think of a better match to show the world the style that made ROH famous. These two just tangled on March 20th in Pittsburgh, with Aries getting the duke with some help from his new found friends, Titus and King. Will that trend continue on National TV?
- The second of the first 3 main events to be filmed is a rematch from the 6th week to be filmed at the inaugural television tapings on March 1st. It is match-up of arguably the two most popular competitors in ROH at this time, and without question, two of the most talented athletes in all professional wrestling. One of these men has been World Champion the other aspires to accomplish the same thing. Once more, it will be Bryan Danielson and Tyler Black one-on-one for the world to admire. There is no hype necessary anytime these two step into the ring.
- The final of the three main events to be filmed on April 9th will feature the first time that the ROH World Tag Team Champions will appear together on Ring of Honor Wrestling on HDNet. During the first set of tapings, El Generico was conspicuously absent to the dismay of many. Now he will be at the side of “Mr. Wrestling” Kevin Steen, and they will oppose one of the best up-and-coming tag teams in wrestling in a rematch from Indianapolis on March 14th– Kenny King and Rhett Titus. King and Titus fell short in Indy, but now they’re apparently under the tutelage of Austin Aries. That alone could make a huge difference in this contest.
- The “Triple Savings Sale” returns this weekend at www.rohwrestling.com. The first part of the sale is 30% Off All Live Event Tickets. This is a great opportunity to save on tickets for Ring of Honor live action in your area. The second part of the sale features over 60 DVD’s priced at $5 Each (or less). Includes in the sale are many Straight Shootin’ titles, FIP DVD’s, and ROH Best of DVD’s. The third part of the sale allows you to save 15% Off Your Next Order. You can use this part of the sale to save even more money off the previous deals mentioned, or you can save on almost everything else we sell. Complete details on the sale can be found here:http://www.rohwrestling.com/news/article.aspx?id=2151.
- ROH is poised to return to the wonderful fans in Dayton and Chicago on April 24th and 25th. Already signed for both events: Bryan Danielson, Kevin Steen, El Generico, Jerry Lynn, Chris Hero, and making their Dayton and Chicago debut, The Dark City Fight Club. Tickets for both events are on sale now at ROHWrestling.com. We’ll have more talent announcements soon right here in the Newswire!
- You can catch Ring of Honor Wrestling on HDNet Saturday night at 8:00 PM. In action will be Kevin Steen vs. Eddie Edwards, Sara Del Rey vs. Daizee Haze, Claudio Castagnoli vs. Alex “Sugarfoot” Payne, and the main event features ROH World Champion Nigel McGuinness vs. Jay Briscoe. For more information visithttp://www.hd.net/ringofhonor.html. HDNet is available in the U.S. and Canada on Bright House Networks, DIRECTV, DISH Network, Charter Communications, Comcast (Boston, Chicago, Denver, Houston, & Minneapolis), Insight Communications, Mediacom Communications, Time Warner Cable, NCTC Affiliated cable systems, Verizon Fios, Bell Express Vu, Star Choice, Shaw, and Cogeco.
- Don’t forget that Ring of Honor is happy to be working with Booker T and the Booker T Fights for Kids Foundation in support of the “Legends of Wrestling” Fanfest, taking place at the George R. Brown Convention Center on April 3rd in Houston from 1-8pm. General Admission Booker T Fanfest tickets are free to anyone who has already purchased a ticket to “Supercard of Honor IV”, taking place that night at the Convention Center! For more information on this great event, please visit www.bookertlow.com.

Triple H Interview
MSN TV: You’re a hard man to track down.
Triple H: We’re hard people to locate. We’re all over the place, you know.
Tell our readers, fans or not, how grueling a schedule you guys have.
Sometimes people say, “It’s so rough, it’s so rough.” It’s not that bad. It used to be a lot worse. But I have two kids and I am home three days a week. But when you do go on the road, it’s hectic. You’re in a different city every day. You fly in to a new town, you do a show, you go to the next town, you sleep, you wake up and do it again. It’s basically just a series of transportation, to the gym, to the arena, to the plane.
It’s like being in a band, except you beat the hell out of each other.
It’s funny because I’ll watch those VH1 “Behind the Music” shows and I’ll hear these bands say, “After four months on the road, we’re ready to crack. We’re at each other’s throats.” I’m thinking, “Four months?” We don’t have time when we don’t tour. That’s the thing that’s a bit daunting about what we do. You know, we have WrestleMania 25 coming up and it’s our Super Bowl. Once that Super Bowl is over, there is a party, but if you are a top guy you really don’t want to go to the party too long because you have to get up the next morning. You have a live TV show the next night, a live “RAW,” and it starts all over again. It’s a never-ending cycle.
You’ve been wrestling for 15 years. You’ve headlined several WrestleManias, but you are about to headline WrestleMania 25. Did you ever imagine it, as a kid watching wrestling in Connecticut, that you’d be doing this?
I didn’t think I’d be in one WrestleMania. It’s a huge thrill. I was just the same as the kids that’ll read this. I was a young kid that loved wrestling and had a pipe dream. It’s worked out for me, and there a lot of guys who it didn’t work out for.
So, “RAW” recently celebrated its 15-year anniversary. “SmackDown” is celebrating its 500th episode. The shows own their time slots. What has kept this business thriving so long? What is it about wrestling that keeps people coming back?
Entertainment. Sometimes I watch TV and I think, “Who watches this crap?” It’s OK, but it’s not exciting, it’s not entertaining — and I’m not saying we’re everyone’s cup of tea. I think there’s a large section of our population — more than people want to believe — that know what we are, want to be entertained. It’s like live comic books. You’ve got good guys and bad guys, good looking women and good looking men, music and pyro and you live out your fantasies with it. There’s this big anti-aggression sentiment, but when you’re a kid, that’s what you think about. You don’t think about picking daisies when you’re a 12-year-old boy; you think about being Batman or Spider-man, or John Cena or Triple H. From there, the story lines meld that all together and keep people involved and interested. Sometimes people look at the stories we do and say they are wacky, but it’s no more wacky than “Desperate Housewives.” I remember when that show first came on and hearing all about it. My wife was watching it and I sat down to watch a few minutes. I was like, “Are you kidding? This is the big rage? And they give us at hard time?”
I’m asked why I like wrestling. Now you do have a female demo, but for us guys, it’s a male soap opera.
Sure.
Speaking of story lines, you recently revealed wrestling’s worst kept secret and wove it perfectly into a story line leading to your match with Randy Orton at WrestleMania: You are, in real life, married to Stephanie McMahon. Were you apprehensive about the decision to reveal this?
For story lines and business, we try to keep that stuff separate. But people knew and we joked about it when I was in DX [comic wrestling tag team formed with fellow superstar Shawn Michaels]. The only reason I was apprehensive is where do we go on the flip side of it. Look at it like this: There is the real world and the WWE Universe. So the cat is now out of the bag in the WWE Universe and it now exists there. So anything that has to do with me story-line-wise, you have to be conscious of the fact that I am married into the McMahon family. That throws a different curve into it. So my only concern was it tainting future story lines.

Michael Cole WWE Magazine Quote
The following is an excerpt from an article on WWE.com, which looks at Michael Cole’s favorite SmackDown! memories in honor of the show approaching its’ 500th episode this Friday night.
“They had a number of extremely memorable matches on SmackDown,” Cole says of Undertaker locking horns with Batista, a rivalry he considers SmackDown’s defining moment in terms of what it did for the Superstars and the show as a whole. “It put the show on the map because it involved one of the biggest legends of this business, Undertaker. It helped make Batista the Superstar he is today. And the attention it put on SmackDown showed how much the show had grown and come full circle. I think it made us the best show in WWE at the time.”

Raw and Smackdown ratings, WWE lowers ticket prices
- The February 27th episode of Smackdown scored a 2.3 rating, so along with Raw, Smackdown is also slipping in the ratings right now.
- The 3/16 edition of Monday Night Raw saw World Wrestling Entertainment’s recent ratings drop continue as the show did just a 3.6 cable rating. That is down from last week’s 3.7 and also from the 4s that they were doing as the build for WrestleMania began.
- WWE is lowering their lowest ticket prices down to $20-$25 for live events in order to counteract the recession.
