Kevin Thorn Update

It was reported yesterday by Bill Behrens that Kevin Thorn’s profile has been added back to the ECW roster page which could imply that his return to the brand may be soon. As of today, however, the profile is no longer on the page, so Thorn may not be returning to the brand as originally thought. It is unknown whether WWE posted the profile by accident and then took it down, or if they changed their plans for Thorn. He is still contracted to WWE, however, and it is possible he may be debuting on Raw or Smackdown.

Snitsky’s Future In Pro Wrestling

Regarding recently released WWE star Gene Snitsky’s future prospects in wrestling, they don’t look too good. Snitsky probably would have gotten regular work in Japan in another era due to his tremendous size, or perhaps even in Mexico, but the foreign groups are employing few Americans these days, so his odds aren’t good. As Tyson Tomko can attest to, he returned to the states because he was having trouble finding regular work in Japan. For foreigners to get work in Mexico these days, they either have to be particularly talented or have some really good connections as the regulars don’t like them coming in and taking their jobs. Regarding TNA, there doesn’t appear to be much interest in him there unless someone influential in the company such as Jeff Jarrett or Kurt Angle strongly pitches for him. Snitsky will probably just wind up on the U.S. indy circuit and doing appearances at various wrestling conventions.

New JR Blog

hope this finds every one having a great weekend. Yours truly will be heading to Toronto on Sunday to get ready for a HUGE night of WWE activities at the Air Canada Center which is essentially a sellout. There are lots of random thoughts from this end so let’s get started…

First of all let’s clear something up….I am not having a “war of words” with Lance Cade as a wrestling website reported in their more often than not knee jerk fashion. Understand this, I have NO issues with Lance and have expressed that time and again. He is a talented kid trained by one of my favorite people in the world, Shawn Michaels. Lance knows that if I can ever help him down the road that I will. He made a mistake. We have all made them. At my best calculation, he has been exiled from the WWE far less than me. Lance knows how to reach me if he has an issue and our relationship is healthy as far as I am concerned. When Lance was released, many websites gave false and sensationalist reports of why. I clarified the matter as best I knew it. Bottom line is that Lance Cade is a fine young man who has a great deal of talent. I have been steadfast in his corner since he came aboard the WWE, when everyone wasn’t by the way, and I will remain so. I hope that Cade returns to the WWE some day to realize his potential. For those that want to make this matter more than it is, go ahead but you are making yourself look bad and creating a story where there is none.

Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler will handle the voice overs for the WWE’s Annual Tribute to the Troops broadcast on NBC Saturday night at 9/8 central. Lawler was flying thru Charlotte when he became a victim of the fog and had to spend the night in the airport on his way home. He text me and was not a happy camper having to sleep upright in the boarding area while fans asked him over and over if he was “the King.” As I told him, “one can’t grieve forever.” King will leave Memphis Monday morning for his , photo finish into Toronto on Monday as, unlike his old partner, he lives in a virtual “stress free” zone.

I would say my chances of seeing one of my all time favorite hires, Trish Stratus, in TO is better than 50/50 but that doesn’t necessarily mean she will appear on TV. If she does,  it likely will be on Raw and it would seem that if she is available that a cameo by the multiple time,  former champion would be a good thing. However, understand that I have no idea what is in store for the TV shows on Monday and that me visiting with Trish is largely my wishful thinking. Is that so wrong??

Speaking of talented Canadians, I have been enjoying the Edge DVD and his story is a compelling one as are the many, many great matches that Edge has been involved. 24 titles since ‘98 is damn impressive and puts the Ontario native in Hall of Fame territory when his time comes in my view. Do you disagree?

After being punted in the head ala Ray Guy (Google it, kids),  I would suggest that it is doubtful that Batista will be able to be a part of Monday Night Raw this week but that’s an assumption and we all know what happens when one assumes.

Orton’s damaging kicks remind me of the “loaded boot” of Dr. X (Jim Osborne version) in the Mid South Wrestling days. Dr. X was one of the most underrated promo talents that many never heard verbalize.

I got a great message from Bret “Hitman” Hart a few hours ago and he said he was getting better every day after having knee replacement surgery. I challenged Bret to a foot race while he is healing but he wants to “race me around the block” once he is better. At that point I think the foot race offer will be off the table. I would love to take a camera crew to Bret’s place in Hawaii and sit with Bret and do the ultimate DVD interview complete with his thoughts on many of his favorite matches that he participated in and that he observed. Playing word association with Bret on virtually dozens of wrestling’s biggest names would be fun.

One of the Hitman’s favorite opponents, Stone Cold Steve Austin, celebrated a birthday this past week. Steve is in south Texas enjoying his ranch and family on the Broken Skull Ranch. He will soon have a ‘fridge full of JR’s BBQ Sauce, Ketchup, and Jalapeño Honey Mustard. I would suggest that 2009 will be a significant year for the Texas Rattlesnake in the film world.

Former WWE Champion Mick Foley, who is related by marriage to Oklahoma offensive line coach “General” James K. Patton, is rumored to be planning on attending the OU-Florida National Championship Game on January 8 in Miami.  If so, it will be good to see my old pal and former albeit short term broadcast partner.

OU being the underdog versus the Gators suits me just fine. Florida doesn’t even have to leave the state to play the game and the Sooner players hopefully can use the fact that they don’t allegedly belong in the game or that they took Texas’ place, etc as motivation. Sadly on one of the pieces of feedback on my weekly WWE.com Smackdown blog, a Texas Longhorn fan wrote that they “hated” OU and perhaps even me. The term dislike seems more approiate as this world has way too many “haters” in it for our own good.

“The Wrestler” is getting a ton of pub and it is likely that this film has totally resurrected Mickey Rourke’s career which peaked over 20 years ago. Individuals I have talked to who have actually seen the film describe the movie in different ways. Some liked it, some didn’t, some thought it was compelling, some thought it was sad, and most thought it was a story of human failure and success and not a specifically a “wrestling movie.” I am anxious to see it without question. I am also of the belief, as I have stated before, that it will not adversely affect the current product whatsoever. Many kids won’t be able to see it most likely as the “nudity” contained within the film would preclude youngsters from attending. Nonetheless I think the movie will certainly initiate some unique conversations about the genre of wrestling but the film having a lasting adverse affect on how many of us make a living isn’t likely.

Ric Flair called me this week and he attended the premier of the film after being personally invited by Mickey Rourke who is a long time fan of “The Nature Boy.” Flair said that Rourke reminded him of “one of the boys” from back in the old territory days of wrestling and was really impressed with many of the stunts that the 52 year old Rourke did in the film. Ric attended a private after party , imagine that, with Rourke, many of the cast and crew plus Chris Rock, 50 Cent, Pam Anderson and other notables at the Four Seasons which concluded at 5 a.m. I have experienced more than my share of “concluded at 5 a.m.” nights with “The Naitch” which I, and my liver, somehow survived.  Ric was in great spirits and has been staying really busy.  Ric recently did a private autograph signing with Joe Namath and Lawrence Taylor in New York City which Ric really enjoyed. I would have loved to have gone out afterwords with those three. Ric has an exciting 2009 shaping up with some really, potentially fun projects. He indicated that without question his send off at last year’s Wrestlemania globally re-established him and created so much awareness for him, his career, and his amazing legacy. After being on TV virtually every week since the mid 70’s, there aren’t too many folks that don’t have some level of familiarity with Flair including TV and advertising executives. Ric is also doing several appearances with Wal-Mart and Coca-Cola throughout the Carolinas in the coming months. Ric is also working out weekly with his son Reid who is looking to establish a wrestling career ala his Dad which won’t be easy to say the least. It seems that Reid and Ric’s older son David will be involved in plenty of tag bouts in ‘09. Ric traveling with his sons will be interesting as the WWE HOF’er will always cast a massive shadow that some day his sons will have to step out of,  if they can. There’s no hurry for that to occur but every son of a famous wrestler has to be able to establish their own identity even though many have failed at doing so.

We are working on our Q & A section which seems to be having issues as the dozens and dozens of responses I made have mysteriously disappeared into internet hell. Plus, our webmaster has apparently been kidnapped but I feel certain that he will reappear and that the problem will be corrected soon. Thanks for your patience and keep your questions coming.

We also appreciate the business that many of you sent our way and we are planning even more promotions and special offers after the first of the year so keep an eye on our on line store here on this very site. Happy Holidays!

ROH

Kenny King Q & A

A few weeks ago, just after the event in Toronto, ROH sat down Kenny King for a ten question Q&A. It didn’t exactly go as planned…

Just for some background, can you tell me a little bit about yourself, like how long you’ve been wrestling, where you got started?

Yeah I guess I can do that. The story of Kenny King is not unlike the story of Alexander the Great, or King Leonidas of Sparta. Destined for greatness. I have always been a standout athlete. Football was my sport of choice, I could naturally play both sides of the ball, but chose defense because I loved the feeling of crushing another man and then watching him crawl back to the sidelines like a wounded animal. After cracking heads at U.S.F in Tampa, I decided to take my skills in a different direction. I tried out and was selected for MTV’s Tough Enough and fought my way to the final 4. This month marks my 7th year in this incredible business and I’ve never looked back

So tell me, how is Kenny King able to live the life that he lives?

Easy, because I’m me. The average cat couldn’t handle this kind of lifestyle. Between the partying, the many, many women, the intense training schedule, the Hollywood premiers, the white parties in the Hamptons. That kind of constant demand would kill an average man. Look its no secret that I’ve got dough. I live by two easy creeds: “Man make the money, money never make the man” and “Got money, and you know it? Take it out your pocket and show it then throw it!” Life is good man.

Do you find it difficult to handle the fortune and fame you appear to be surrounded by?

Nah, It’s difficult to handle the haters and the suckers that fame and fortune bring. Like the late great Biggie Smalls said; “Mo money, Mo problems”. When you are YRR people just want to bask in your aura. So I strive to be sucker free.

It’s been just over a year since you made your first appearance on an ROH Event (Motor City Madness 2007). How do you feel about Ring of Honor over these past 13 months?

Ring of Honor has a great tradition, it has a great legacy and it has great athletes. So it only made sense that I should be a part of Ring of Honor. Over the past 13 months there have some that have come and others that have gone, but the excitement is still there. Ever since I stepped into that ring in Detroit and whipped Alex “sugarpants” Payne and The Grizzly Ringworm dude, I’ve felt like I belonged there and I have ever since.

Where do you see yourself a year from now?

A year from today, I will be three things,. 1. Still Rich. 2. Still cool as a fan. 3. On top of the Ladder here in ROH. I will be so far ahead of the pack, the rest of you chumps will barely be able to make out the Gucci symbol on my loafers.

So two weeks ago in Montreal, you teamed with Kenny Omega against the Briscoes. How did you feel about that? More importantly, why did you walk out on your partner?

First off, me and the Briscoes have beef going back to last year in F.I.P. So any chance I get to punch Mark or Jay in the face I’m gonna take. This Kenny Omega dude just happened to be around and seemed like he couldn’t screw up enough to interfere with me winning the match. Well apparently I was wrong. I had things under control. As soon as I tagged him in, The Briscoes stomped him flat. Well after a while I got tired of trying to tag in and save him. So when I saw that he was trying to tag me finally, I treated a sucker like a sucker and left him to fend for himself. Maybe he’s mad, maybe he’s not. Seriously, what’s he gonna do about it?

The next logical question would then be, why Rhett Titus? What’s the story there?

It’s hard to soar with the eagles when you’re surrounded by turkeys. I looked around the ROH locker room and, with a few exceptions, all I saw were turkeys. The reason the YRR was formed was because Chasyn Rance, Jason Blade, and Sal Rinauro and I are cut from the same cloth. I see a lot of the same qualities in Rhett Titus. The guy bagged that Daizee Haze chick, I can respect that. Now he’s got this crazy lizard man wanting to fight him about it. I can relate to that. Between the two of us, we get more ass than a drawer full of thongs. On top of the fact that he’s a top flight athlete. This could be a very dangerous pairing not only for the women of the world, but for the tag team division of ROH.

So do you see yourself going after the tag titles possibly……..

***At this point Kenny’s cell phone rang and, with a smile on his face, he walked off into the night, apparently talking to someone named Monique, and took off in his ‘08 Maserati***

Former Creative Member Blasts Handling of Hardy Angle

Seth Mates, former WWE creative team member, recently posted a blog over on Newsday.com. criticizing WWE for the recent Jeff Hardy storyline they ran last Sunday at Survivor Series. Mates wrote, “Fact: Jeff Hardy is one strike away from his WWE career ending…More importantly, he could be one relapse away from endangering his own life. To turn his real-life struggles into a storyline is sick and twisted.”

Mates went on to criticize Vince’s decision to have The Undertaker put Vickie Guerrero in a casket near the anniversary of Eddie’s death. He wrote, “Vince’s life is wrestling…His family’s life is wrestling. He’s surrounded by wrestling people and has never wanted for anything. And because his philosophy is ‘what’s right for the business is what’s right,’ then he feels everyone around him should give the same, even though they have complications in their daily lives that Vince wouldn’t even understand. And the fact that Vince surrounds himself with enablers — “yes men” whose survival on the business is contingent on keeping Vince happy and telling him what he wants to hear — doesn’t help matters.”

WWE

11/30/08 House Show

Sign Guy was actually at this show with his usual funny signs. I imagine it must be strange for WWE today since this show starts at 2PM and not the usual 5PM, 6PM or 7PM shows.

Match#1: Snitsky VS Jamie Noble

The crowd was really behind Jamie Noble for this one.
Winner: Jamie Noble

Tony Chimel introduces the hostess which was Kelly Kelly, she is up and the cheap seats and asks them to answer the SAME EXTREMELY EASY QUESTION to get from row seats. Yes we know WM24 was in Orlando, FL.

Match#2: WWE Women’s Champion Beth Phoenix VS Candice Michelle

Typical womens match. Candice only botched one move, good for her. I was kinda disappointed Mickie wasn’t there
Winner: Beth Pheonix still Champ

Match#3: Santino Marella VS CM Punk

Santino first came out and talked some garbage and the sound system was pretty bad so he was hard to hear and was on the receiving end of “What?” chants. He offered a challenge to anyone in the back and CM Punk came out. He got an especially good pop since it was a suprise. People were expecting Regal the whole time Marella was babbling in the ring.
Winner: CM Punk

Match#4: Cryme Tyme VS Manu and Randy Orton w/Cody Rhodes

First Manu and Cody came out. Then Randy Orton’s music came on, he got some mixed reactions, obviously the chicks were losing it as they were drooling watching Orton. It was personally a suprise to me because I was under the assumption he would be in the main event, you know where he belongs!!! He was the guy I came to see and it was just odd for me because I was cheering Randy on because he’s a tough guy and just an awesome performers as the gals around me were pretty much having orgasams watching Orton.
Winner: Randy Orton pins one of the Cryme Tyme guys after doing the RKO. It was a brilliant finish because Manu was the legal man and Randy just simply touched Manu to be the legal man and Cryme Tyme had no idea and Randy came in and went for the kill. Would have been better if he was part of the main event.

Match#5: ECW Heavyweight Champion Matt Hardy VS Mark Henry
Extreme Rules

This match also came as a surprise because it seems like now it is pretty much official that the ECW brand is travling full-time with the RAW brand. Which Jim Ross stated wouldn’t happen in his blog, he was wrong just as he was wrong when he stated he wouldn’t be drafted to another brand! Huge pops for Matt Hardy, people don’t really take notice how much respect and passion Matt Hardy has for the business, he would work with both of his ankles broken if he could.
There was huge pops when Hardy brought the ladder out. It was such a great moment for me personally because I’m so used to seeing stuff like that on TV but to see it live was definately an amazing experience like no other.

***INTERMISSION***

Tony Chimel brings out Kelly Kelly and she picks a special timekeeper (or bell ringer something to that effect) for the next match.

Match#6: Rey Mysterio VS Mike Knox

Rey gets huge pops of course and Knox looks like Tom Hanks in Cast Away with his huge beard. It goes back and forth until Rey finally hits the 619 and his splash for the win.
Winner: Rey Mysterio

Match#7: Kane VS Kofi Kingston

Kane actually attacks Rey as he was making his way to the back after the last match. I actually thought it was pretty funny. Kofi Kingston is just phenomenal in the ring, just freaking amazing! Kane mocks Kofi’s taunts in such a hilarious way. I don’t know everytime Kane does something it’s funny to me. It’s meant to get heat from fans but it makes me laugh. I actually don’t remember who wins this one. I’m guessing it was Kane, anyway it ends with Rey Mysterio saving Kofi from Kane’s rampage.
Winner: Kane of Kofi don’t remember…lol

Match#8: World Heavyweight Champion John Cena VS Chris Jericho

Y2J come out first and mocks the fans chanting “Cena, Cena, Cena” in such a funny way. I was thinking this was going to be a Triple Threat with Batista, Cena and Y2J. I wanted to see Batista…oh well. After Y2J stops talking John Cena’s music hit and everyone goes freaking nuts. It was very reminisce of 2006..excuse me 2005, 2006 and 2007 John Cena where it seemed he would be holding the title forever. I will admit I’m not fan of John Cena but I do respect him and when he comes out I’m not exactly amazed at him but mostly at the reaction he gets. The people should come alive like that all the time.
Winner: John Cena Still World Campion

At the end John Cena called up two very special people who were front row to the ring. It was a women from the Armed Forces with her son both dressed up in camo. John Cena thanked them and plugged the upcoming 6th Annual Tribute to the Troops. The crowd chanted USA, USA, USA. Cena then proceeded to high five everyone as Tony Chimel was about to close the show. Cena gets in the ring and interupts him. Tony Chimel resides in Philadelphia, PA so Cena mentions that his family was present at the show and it was actually his children that was with him at ringside the entire show. Cena said if he had his family at the show, he wouldn’t close the show with “Ladies and gentleman have a good night”. He would be telling everyone to get rowdy. Cena gave Tony Chimel a few trys to close the show correctly and ends up giving Chimel the FU because he doesn’t have enough excitement for closing out the show.

Cena greeted the fans and left.

It was a good show just wished Batista and Mickie James would have been there. I’m guessing she’s “resting” due to her reported hyperextended elbow, horrible timing.

Announcing Update

It was reported several days ago that Vince McMahon is currently instituting a new policy for the WWE announcers mandating that they speak more conversationally during commentary as opposed to the more over-the-top nature some work. A lot of this is being directed towards Michael Cole, who is being told to speak less often during wrestler promos, and take a more Gordon Solie-type approach to his commentary.

Diva Working Through Injury

Mickie James is currently working through a hyper-extended elbow according to several reports. Her ring use has been limited recently as WWE hopes she will be able to rehab the injury with less time in the ring, and it’s also being said that she’ll be kept off house shows for the next week or so to further diminish the amount of pressure she puts on the elbow. WWE does not want to take her off the road completely as she is said to be a big help in laying out the matches for most of the Divas.

WWE

This Day In WWE History

On this day in history in ….

1992 - Jerry Lawler defeats Todd Champion in Memphis, Tennessee for the USWA Unified Heavyweight Title, starting Lawler’s 13th reign with the belt.

1998 - In Houston, Texas, Vince McMahon creates the WWF “Hardcore Championship” and awards it to Mankind (Mick Foley). Ironically, Mankind would hold the title for less than a month, and never win it back. Despite this, the Hardcore Title is often associated with Foley.

1999 - Mankind & Al Snow defeat Hardcore & Crash Holly for the WWF World Tag Team Title in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

2000 - The WWF released the following regarding the Owen Hart lawsuit:

World Wrestling Federation Entertainment, Inc. Announces Settlement in Owen Hart Case

STAMFORD, Conn.–Nov. 2, 2000–World Wrestling Federation Entertainment, Inc. (NYSE: WWF) announced today that it has agreed to a settlement in a previously disclosed lawsuit filed by the members of the family of Owen Hart, a professional wrestler, whose accidental death occurred while performing under contract with the Company. Under the terms of the agreement, the WWFE will receive a full release from any further liability in the case.

`It has always been our intention to settle this case and we tried to do what we felt was in the best interest for all those involved, particularly for the family of Owen Hart,” said Linda McMahon, CEO.

As a result of the settlement, the WWFE will take a charge of $7 million which is net of its insurance recoveries and will retain the right to pursue contribution and indemnity from the companies that manufactured and sold the equipment involved in the accident. The charge will be recorded in selling, general and administrative expenses for the quarter ended October 27, 2000.

That was the ending to one of the most tragic stories in the history of wrestling. Kansas City Circuit Judge Douglas Long. Jr. approved the settlement, and the family of Owen Hart received $18 million dollars for the loss of Owen Hart on May 23, 1999 when his harness at the Kemper Arena malfunctioned and he fell to his death during the Over The Edge pay-per-view. The WWF told stockholders that they would pay $7million of the payment, and they wanted the rigging and harness companies to pay the other half. One of the companies, Amspec, Inc., filed for bankruptcy right before the judgment, possibly in anticipation of the payment.

Owen’s wife, Martha, received $10 million. Their children, Oje, 8, and Athena, 5, received $3 million each. Stu and Helen Hart, Owen’s parents, each received $1 million. After the hearing, Martha took her children to the Kemper Arena to see where Owen died. Martha announced that she was using $2 million of the money to start the Owen Hart Foundation to help the less fortunate.

Perhaps the saddest part of the story is how the Hart family, once thought to be a very tight unit, was now in shambles. Bret and Keith Hart sided with Martha, Stu and Helen, while sisters Diana and Ellie did not. Of course, their respective husbands, Davey Boy Smith and Jim Neidhart signed contracts with the WWF after the incident. Martha had some stinging comments about the situation after the settlement in the Calgary Sun.

“This is not a close-knit family and I’m not part of it anymore — we carry the same last name but that’s as far as it goes. They betrayed Owen by working against me and his children and I will never consider myself, or my children, a part of that family anymore. I will respect Owen’s parents and I will stay in touch with a select few of them but people need to know that Owen was a white sheep in a black family.”

2004 - At the Smackdown taping in St. Louis, Missouri, Kurt Angle made a challenge to the current crop of WWE Tough Enough contestants, one that nearly ended in disaster.  Here is the report from that show:

We then went to the ring, where Al Snow had all the contestants assembled.  Kurt Angle was then brought to the ring. Angle went down the line, asking each contestant their name, then insulting them while getting into their face. When he got in the face of Nick, he asked him to turn his eyes away, and when he wouldn’t, he shoved him.  Angle seemed to take great pleasure in ripping into Dan R. (the smartass) and Dan P. (the MMA fighter).  Some of the contestants cracked smiles and laughed during the segment, and Angle would yell at them and shove them to shut them up. Angle talked about what it takes to succeed in wrestling, and told the contestants that he hated them, since they were getting a chance to win a million dollars.  Angle (who was wearing his amateur wrestling shoes) did some squat thrusts (squat into pushup and back to standing position).  Angle then told the group they would be doing squat thrusts, and whoever did the most without messing up would win a special prize. While Angle berated the group, last week’s segment with the Big Show was recapped. After the recap, Angle brought two referees to watch the group and eliminate whoever messed up. Ryan appeared to be able to do them much faster than the rest. Justice was eliminated first, then one by one they gave out, including Ryan. The last two were Daniel Puder and Chris Nawrocki, with Nawrocki winning.  Nawrocki was then told his special prize was his first match ever … right now with Kurt Angle. Apparently, this was shoot-style wrestling, using “professional wrestling rules”.

Kurt Angle vs. Chris Nawrocki. Angle took Nawrocki down with a front facelock, but Nawrocki grabbed the ropes.  Angle then reapplied the hold, and easily took Nawrocki down for a pin. Winner: Kurt Angle.

Angle then asked the other contestants if anyone else wanted to take him on. Daniel Puder volunteered.

Kurt Angle vs. Daniel Puder. They grappled, and Puder went for an arm, but Angle backed him into the ropes.  As they came off, Angle grabbed a front facelock, but Puder got away.  The crowd was chanting “UFC” for Puder (who, while he does have a MMA background, never actually fought in UFC).  They locked up again, and went to the mat. Angle was on top, and Puder went for a keylock, but his shoulders were down, so he was pinned (although it appeared his shoulder was up). Winner: Kurt Angle.

Puder reached out for a handshake, but Angle got in his face, and the two were talking nose to nose. You couldn’t make out what they said, other than Angle saying “Now get out of my face” at the end.  Tazz said Angle was telling him that you have to stay off your back in a wrestling contest, although that obviously was not what was being said.  Angle then told all the contestants that as far as he was concerned, none of them were Tough Enough.

In truth, replays of the “match” showed that Puder had Angle’s arm locked up and was probably moments away from submitting Angle when referee Earl Hebner counted a fast pin on Puder, who obviously didn’t have his shoulders down.  Angle was embarrassed, Puder gained a measure of popularity (that he still plays off of to this day), and many experts wondered what the hell WWE was thinking when they came up with the idea for the segment.

2007 - Harry Smith and Chris Masters were suspended by WWE for Wellness Policy violations. They were the first two workers to be named under the terms of the revised provision where Wellness Policy violators’ names would be released to the public.  Masters would later be released from the company.

World Wrestling Entertainment Suspends Two Performers

STAMFORD, Conn., November 2, 2007 – In accordance with its Substance Abuse and Drug Testing Policy, WWE today suspended the following performers for violations: Chris Mordetzky (Chris Masters) for 60 days (second violation) and Harry Smith (D. H. Smith) for 30 days (first violation).

The Miz Forced To Remain In Character In TV Spot

Eric Sturrock sent word that The Miz did a guest spot on Sci Fi’s Ghosthunters and stayed in character throughout the marathon broadcast, which he was told to do by Sci Fi/WWE.  It was during a seven hour block so the network wanted to cross-promote, according to Ghosthunters Co-Founder Grant Wilson, who wrote about it in his blog.  About Miz Wilson wrote, “The Miz, or Mike, as we called him. Was honestly, a very nice guy. He was told to play his wrestling character on this investigation. I asked him personally before the show “What is the worst part about being a wrestler?” to which he replied “Have to portray this cocky womanizer. I have to make everyone hate me, and it sucks”. So, as anyone could tell from watching the live show, we weren’t too happy with the constant talking about wrestling and the Real World. But that aside, Mike is a really really nice guy.”  A recap of it airs Wednesday at 9 p.m. on Sci Fi.

Jim Ross Writes New Blog Entry

http://www.jrsbarbq.com/blog/good-news-shipping-costspost-smackdown-random-thoughtsbeyond-matsailors-need-thick-skin

What a great football weekend here in Norman with temps today scheduled to be in the upper 70’s or low 80’s. Oklahoma plays our most respected rival, Nebraska, Saturday night at 8/7 central on ESPN where yours truly will be manning the sidelines spending my favorite time of the entire week watching “my team” play. This will be a much more positive experience than reading on the ‘net how “ridiculous” I looked Friday night in the sailor’s outfit on Smackdown. I think that was the general idea and, if so, mission accomplished. The truth hurts sometimes.

Overall, I enjoyed Friday Night Smackdown. I have certainly been a part of worse broadcasts and without question on better ones as well. Because it was Halloween and I was providing moral support for the Mrs as she gave out Halloween candy to all the little ghouls and goblins in our neighborhood, I actually watched the show as it aired and not via DVR.

Wife Jan was unaware that I was in costume until she saw the show and without question she laughed out loud and started calling relatives and friends. I felt so proud. Thanks, honey.

Speaking of Halloween and the generation we live in and what our society may look forward to in the future, some little 7 or 8 year old spoiled brat asked Jan if she had Kit Kat bars and she said no that she had Snickers, Milky Ways, M&M’s and several other prominent name brand candy. After finding out that there were no Kit Kat bars the boy told my wife, “Keep your candy lady” and walked off. His mommy was waiting for the child in their Mercedes at the end of our drive way but what I would have given to have been at the door when the little jerk showed complete disrespect to someone providing him FREE stuff.

Get back to your video game you little turd or go critique a wrestling show on the internet.

I saw some criticism of Chavo Guerrero being ‘Taker’s Casket Match opponent as if anyone thought Chavo was going to be any thing more than a sacrificial lamb and set the table for the Big Show. I thought that was pretty well established without saying such long before the final segment of the show.

Yes, I made a factual error as the Undertaker has lost the isolated, casket match here and there including one that I called against the late Yokozuna. That was a mental lapse on my end and ironically no one ever corrected me.  I had asked for more info earlier in the day on Casket Matches but that info never materialized. No mistaking, this was my error but sometimes a guy needs a little help remembering all the details considering I’ve got more going on in my life than wrestling….or entertainment…or whatever. Nonetheless I apologize for the mistake. Perhaps my sailor hat was on too tight.

The Masked Magician segment was forgettable. But now I’m sounding as cynical as those that described yours truly in a variety of unique ways last night including “ridiculous”, Pillsbury Doughboy”, etc.  Oh well,  I wonder what the masked magician does in his day job.

Jimmy Yang is grossly underrated and with such a lack of talent depth why Yang isn’t being utilized more prominently is a question I won’t venture to ask.

For Big Zeke to improve and get to the next level both financially and talent wise, he needs to start wrestling more and managing or what ever it is he does less. Nice look, solid athleticism, but the only way a young guy gets better is to get into the ring and get after it. We all know Kendrick is really good, just small, which can work to Brian’s advantage with Zeke in the picture.

I have no idea where the seemingly nicer Great Khali is going but I am thankful that he is heterosexual. Ranjin’s sideburns are outrageous and are just a little width away from the lamb chop level, Honky Tonk Man level. Could these two natives of India, not HTM,  be preparing to be the next comedy pairing in their native land? Stranger things have happened friends and neighbors.

Why didn’t Michael Cole mention that the King and HTM are first cousins when they all did their “entertaining” commentary Monday Night? I would have loved to have heard the reactions.

I really enjoyed the 6 man tag on Friday Night Smackdown. Really nice energy and execution. Plus, the world’s “Angriest Announcer” was particularly good in this contest. He was oh so “entertaining” and isn’t that what matters most for a TV performer?

The submission hold that the Undertaker uses has no official name for the record. Gogoplata it is not even though it isn’t if you know what I mean. We aren’t allowed to say choke but it does slip by occasionally.

Said it before…I like where Vladimir Kozlov is headed but how much better would he be with a bona fide, main event level manager? BTW there are none available which speaks to the shape the business is in regarding talent development.

Some naysayers who seemingly love to bitch about virtually every segment of every broadcast took issue at the Monday Night Raw promotion within Friday Night Smackdown. Were you surprised that the WWE pushed promoting the 3 hour Raw this Monday in Tampa? Raw sells more PPV’s than any other WWE vehicle and getting Raw healthy with strong ratings is a must.

Speaking of Raw, what a jaw dropping night it would be if Miz and Morrison beat DX and Jericho beat Batista in the World’s Title Bout. I’m just saying…..

Yours truly made the mistake of watching “Beyond the Mat” late Friday night and watching it still pisses me off. I honestly feel as if I was duped during the production of this film which I was told specifically was only going to be an “art film” and released only in a few selected art theaters. No one ever mentioned a DVD release or the fact that the film was produced in 1999 and is still playing on cable. Bottom line, I spend many, many hours in helping facilitate WWE talents for the film not to mention helping provide unlimited access and got not as much as a thank you in the credits much less a pay day. The film goes to great lengths to sensationalize the negative aspect of the business, some deservedly so, and without question the production had its stellar moments. But a thanks and a check would have been nice to have received as I assure you that the film made someone some cash.

Just for the record, we broke the Austin breaking the extras nose on the set of Steve’s movie last week. We had that here on Monday. Steve always texts me on game day or I him and he will hopefully be able to find ESPN Saturday night in Vancouver to watch the OU-Nebraska game. Many eyes Saturday night will be in Lubbock Texas where Texas Tech hopes to upset #1 ranked Texas which most college football fans other than those who support UT are pulling for as well. I see Texas winning but a Tech win would not shock me either in what will be a rabid Lubbock, Texas Saturday night on ABC.

Just a personal opinion, but I would love to see more pieces like the Cena vignette utilized to help establish more wrestler’s personas. In order for any talent to become marketable, the audience must make an emotional investment in that individual and understand what the athlete is about. What do they do outside the ring as in what are their hobbies, their personal backgrounds, what are their families like, essentially what makes these men and women tick?. The smallest detail can actually link a fan to the wrestler and then the foundation begins to be established or strengthened.

BTW is there anything sadder when watching TV wrestling than to seeing a non skilled verbalizer attempt to be a comedian?

Got a nice email from a fan who actually did remember Sailor Art Thomas on a night where the ultra powerful Thomas with a body builders psychique before the advent of “you know what” teaming with Dick “The Bruiser” (no kids that not a porn star) vs. the Blackjacks, Mulligan and Lanza, managed but the incomparable Bobby Heenan. BTW if Heenan were in is prime today and was managing Kozlov, I would pencil the big Russian in the Main Event at Wrestlemania as we speak.

I plan on answering a bunch of your questions/comments on our Q&A section before I head to Orlando this week. Depending on how the OU-NU games comes out they might be a little edgy.

Have a great day and thanks for stopping by. Oh yea, our store is open for those of you that feel like supporting the cause here. Your biz is greatly appreciated. We have positive news on our shipping issues so that problem is solved for most of you via the United States Postal Service.

Paul London Comments On Position In WWE

-I had the unexpected chance to spot Paul London while I was visiting relatives in Austin, TX late last week. He was very nice and stopped for a brief chat for a few minutes. Here are some things we talked about:

Plans on returning to the ring, but not sure when; it depends on where he is needed and what creative has planned in the future. At the moment, however, he is dealing with family and personal situations and hopes to be back “real soon.”

Appeared to be quite enthusiastic about being included in the SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 video game, and thinks what he has seen of the game so far is “pretty cool.”

Commented on Lance Cade’s release a few days earlier which completely shocked him. He couldn’t go any further on what actually happened, though.

Cleared up a few rumors:

On being released/quit the company: “I’m still with WWE, just on a leave.

On being “jealous” of former tag partner Kendrick’s recent push: “I couldn’t be more thrilled for Bri; honestly, his latest success makes me happy, if anything.”

On being injured: “I am not injured. There were minor things back late this past summer, but I’ve long healed up from those.”

On being ‘dead’: “Last time I checked, I was still breathing (laughed).”

On being secretly engaged/married/etc.: “If that is the case, someone forgot to tell ME!” As mentioned in a previous interview, the only ‘marriage’ is to his career and the only ‘family’ he has close to him at home are his two dogs. He did affectionately mention “a very close platonic friendship with an older woman in Pennsylvania (”somehow I tend to click more with women over 25″)”, but didn’t elaborate.

On the internet community: “It doesn’t bother me much. I do visit a lot of fan sites, including my close friend’s, not just one or two, so hopefully no one is thinking they’re special and I’m just visiting theirs and not anyone else’s (laughed)!”

In closing, he stated that, “I‘m sorry if some fans feel ‘let down‘ or whatever because of my long absence from TV and house shows, but there are some things that are more important that should have to be given attention. There will be plenty of time for me to resume my career, but I haven‘t forgotten the fans. Thanks for keeping me in your thoughts, though.”

Jeff Jarrett Rips Kurt Angle In Interview

- JEFF JARRETT has sensationally hit back at Kurt Angle, blasting: “I can’t say enough good things about him as a professional wrestler. But Kurt the human being is a different story.”
Jeff, who co-owns TNA Wrestling, signed former WWE champion Angle to a big money contract two years ago.

But he went mad after reading comments the Olympic gold medallist made to SunSport slamming the company for an overreliance on gimmick matches and run-ins.

And their feud took a more personal turn when divorcee Kurt proclaimed he “wasn’t the only one who has lost his wife” as part of TNA’s TV show Impact.

Jeff’s beloved Jill died last year of breast cancer last year, at the age of 37. They have three daughters together.

Although he writes and edits the TV shows, and a similar line was used the following week, Jarrett claims Kurt came up with it without his knowledge or approval.

He told us: “The Kurt Angle we hired two years ago and the guy we have under contract today are two different individuals. He’s gone through a lot of change, in and out of the ring.

“For him to say that about Jill totally caught me by surprise.

“I found him afterwards and said: ‘Kurt, you need to focus. You’re not hurting me. You’re not hurting my girls. You’re hurting yourself.’

“And that’s how I feel.

“I knew my wife better than anybody. If there were anybody on this earth who could speak for her it’d be me. It wouldn’t bother her in the least.

“My girls didn’t watch it, they didn’t see it. As they age, if I have to sit down and talk to them about it I will. They’re growing up in this business and they understand it takes all kinds to make this business thrive.

“In reality it hurt only Kurt and the core of who he is. I feel sorry for the guy.”

TNA Announcer Gets Injured; TNA Fans Voted To Be, “Dumb.”

- On this past week’s edition of Impact, Kurt Angle, with his psychotic stare, came out and attacked TNA ring announcer Dave Penzer. He struck Penzer in the face with his shoe, and then put the Ankle Lock on him. Penzer was legitimately hurt as his face got really swollen. Backstage announcer Lauren Thompson took over ring announcing duties for the rest of the night.

- On TruTV (formerly known as Court TV) there is a show based on The Smoking Gun website called “The Smoking Gun Presents.” The show usually features dumb criminals, but they’ve since branched out to feature footage of dumb stunts, fans, competitons, etc. On this week’s show, the theme was “The Smoking Gun Presents The World’s Dumbest Fans.” TNA was ranked at No. 17 on the show. The ranking was based on the fan submitted videos for the “Fan’s Revenge Match” between LAX and Beer Money at the Victory Road pay-per-view back in July. They aired footage of some of the TNA fan-submitted videos and the commentators on the show made fun of them. The episode may replay at 9:00 or 10:00 p.m. this Monday as two one-hour episodes are set to air that night.
